It's Tasty Tuesday!!

For this week's Tasty Tuesday, I figured I'd be a little selfish. Since I'm not a big recipe person(I usually just throw stuff together and voila! I have a meal!), please share a recipe that you use in the crockpot. I am hoping that we get the crockpot off of our registry and I have to say I have never cooked in a crockpot! I am super excited though!

So post a recipe that you would recommend for a newby crockpot user!

Also...I've added a few questions so we can get an idea of your cooking habits. Please answer the following questions:

- What is your favorite food?
- What is your second favorite food?
- What do you absolutely hate?
- Is there anything you like to cook? Is there anything you hate to cook?
- What kinds of foods would you like to learn how to cook?

Thanks, ladies! Cool

Re: It's Tasty Tuesday!!

  • Here is a recipe I would like to try:

Crock Pot Orange Chicken! It's one of my favorites and would love to try it in a crockpot!

    - What is your favorite food? My favorite food is Sushi

    - What is your second favorite food? My second favorite food is Chicken Parmesan

    - What do you absolutely hate? There are few foods that I hate. I cannot eat olives by themselves though. I can eat them on pizza, or in a pasta sauce, but by themselves I really don't like them.

    - Is there anything you like to cook? Is there anything you hate to cook?

I love to cook pasta sauces, since I lived in Italy. It's fun and I know so many different ways to "embellish" it!  I hate cutting up onions...I don't know why! I always have...I'm slightly afraid of knives, so that has something to do with it!

    - What kinds of foods would you like to learn how to cook? I would love to learn how to cook healthier foods. Quinoia is something I especially would like to start cooking with.

I'm looking forward to your answers!

Sprinkle each serving with some cheese and chips.Makes 8 servings.

    - What is your favorite food? hmmm, I love salmon... especially maple salmon on the BBQ. It's so yummy and so good for me. Pair it with some griled asparagus and I'm in heaven.
    - What is your second favorite food? I absolutely love crackers. The gluten is brutal for me, but Wheat Thins are a weakness for me.
    - What do you absolutely hate? eggs. I will eat egg white omelets with a lot of hot sauce, but eggs in general make me gag.
    - Is there anything you like to cook? Is there anything you hate to cook? I'm pretty much game for anything; I like trying new things especially healthy recipes. I still have issues cooking a full chicken or anything that still looks like the animal; I know where meat comes from but I don't need the reminder lol
    - What kinds of foods would you like to learn how to cook? I've never made a full turkey which is something I'd love to do. I'd also like to learn to make a nice gravy like my mom does; even if I rarely eat it.

  • We just tried this one on sunday.
    http://www.skinnytaste.com/2012/01/crock-pot-bolognese-sauce.html
It was yummy, but I had to add extra spices because it was kind of bland.  Next time I will add minced garlic too.

I use my crockpot all the time!  You can do virtually anything in there and it's ready to eat when you get home from work.  I do soups, roasts, whole chickens, etc.

-What is your favorite food?  Mashed potatoes and gravy!
    - What is your second favorite food? Pie!
    - What do you absolutely hate? I also don't hate many foods, but I can't stomach black olives at all.  I'm not crazy about spinach, but I try to mix into a lot of stuff because it is so good for you.  I keep hoping I will eventually acquire a taste for it.
    - Is there anything you like to cook? Is there anything you hate to cook?  I love the bake!  Cakes, pies, cookies, etc.  Nothing I really hate to cook.  What I hate is doing the dishes afterwards. LOL!
    - What kinds of foods would you like to learn how to cook? I'd like to learn how to decorate cakes like the pros.  I dabble, but it doesn't turn out the same.  LOL!

My friend Nicki's vegan pumpkin chili. Super easy & super delicious!  I'm sure there is a way to add meat to the recipe if you'd like to =]

    Recipe:
Onions cooked in olive oil until clear
    Garlic, minced
    One Red pepper, chopped
    One Green pepper, chopped
    Baby carrots, chopped
    One can of back beans
    One can of chick peas
    2 cans of red beans
One can no salt added stewed tomatoes
One can no salt added diced tomatoes
One half can of pumpkin puree
    One half beer of choice
Lots of spices of your choosing

Add to crockpot in that order, cook for 4-6 hours on low.

    - What is your favorite food?
    Italian

    - What is your second favorite food?
    Mexican

    - What do you absolutely hate?
I hate brussel spouts and olives

    - Is there anything you like to cook? Is there anything you hate to cook?
I love cooking pretty much anything, except meat. Being vegetarian, it kinda messes with my head, and the smell makes me gag. I do it when I absolutely have to (i.e. when FI isn't around to help start dinner)

    - What kinds of foods would you like to learn how to cook?
    Indian & Thai food!

  • My favorite crock pot recipe is definitely my easy chicken n dumplings. I kinda made it up lol. I just cut up some chicken breasts into cubes, pour in two cans of chicken broth, 2 cans of cream of chicken soup and stir. Cook on low 6ish hours, then follow the recipe on the Bisquick box for dumplings. I drop them in with a small cookie scoop then cook 10 minutes with the lid on then 10 with the lid off. So yummy!

    - What is your favorite food? Hard to pick, but I love Mexican food and sushi.
    - What is your second favorite food? See above =]
    - What do you absolutely hate? I refuse to try squid. I am not a picky eater.
    - Is there anything you like to cook? Is there anything you hate to cook? I like cooking, I am learning to make all kinds of new things lately.
    - What kinds of foods would you like to learn how to cook? Lots of things. There are a lot of things I have never cooked, like a whole chicken, or other cuts of meat.

  • I know what you mean about not being a recipe person. I will use them as a basic guideline but I almost always tweak them. I think that is part of the reason I never bake, it's too exacting.

    Crock Pot Recipe:
I have only been used my crock pot a few times but I love it. I think it will see even more use this summer when I don't want to heat up the house.

I'll cheat and include 2 recipes!

    Skinnytaste Sante Fe Chicken (link)
This is delicious, healthy and super easy. Unlike a lot of crock pot recipes, this one takes no prep. We have served it over rice and used it to make tacos. My only complaint about this recipe is that is ends up kind of soupy. I have tried reducing the liquid but it only helps a little bit.

    Hawaiian Kalua Pork (link)
This was my dish for a friend's Oscar party in honor of the Descendants. It's super easy with just three ingredients and tastes amazing. I cheated and used cheaper Celtic Sea Salt instead of the Hawaiian salt. I would not suggest using regular salt though.

    - What is your favorite food?
Cheese and anything with cheese. If I had my choice I'd eat hors de'vours everyday. I love the variety.
    - What is your second favorite food?
I also love a wide variety of ethnic foods - Japanese, Ethiopian, Thai, Mexican, Greek, Persian, Italian the list is endless.
    - What do you absolutely hate?
Eel. I also hated blue cheese with a burning passion until about a year ago. I have no idea why my taste buds suddenly made the switch.
    - Is there anything you like to cook? Is there anything you hate to cook?
I love to cook but hate to clean up afterwards. Luckily that is what FH is for! I enjoy cooking anything with wine in it, since then I have an excuse to drink some too. I am not a big fan of super labor intensive, 5 hour dishes. I prefer simple recipes that give you big tastes without a lot of effort or costs.
As I mentioned earlier, I don't really like to bake. It's too much of a science where I find cooking to be more of an art.
    - What kinds of foods would you like to learn how to cook?
Healthy weeknight recipes that my slightly picky FH will eat.

As you can probably tell from my walls o' text, I kind of like food! Both of my parents are excellent cooks and my father was a professional chef for a brief period.

I just printed this recipe out today!  I can't wait to make it.  My FI and I loved the pork we had at the luau we went to in Hawaii last year.  I actually have hawaiian sea salt from that trip too to use!!

  • - What is your favorite food? Gramma's Spaghetti and Meatballs
    - What is your second favorite food? Buffalo Chicken Dip
    - What do you absolutely hate? Octopus or any fish cooked whole with it's creepy little eyes looking at me on the plate.  FI's family is Portuguese and they love this stuff.
    - Is there anything you like to cook? Is there anything you hate to cook? I love to bake, I'm like a crazy woman around Christmas because I like to make my grandmother's cookies.  There isn't really anything that I don't like to cook.
    - What kinds of foods would you like to learn how to cook? I'd like to learn how to make fancier dishes than the usual meatloaf and taco dinners.  Something for a special occassion.

FI and I discovered Crock Pot Pulled Pork.  I improvised it one morning when I was in a rush.  I took a frozen pork tenderloin and put in the crockpot.  Poured a whole bottle of BBQ sauce over the top and chopped up a green pepper and threw it in there too.  Set the crock pot to low for 8 hours.  When I got home it took two forks and pulled the pork apart and doused it in the sauce from the crock pot.  Serve on a plate by itself or on a bun for pulled pork sandwiches.  It's one of our favorite "running late morning" meals.

  • I sadly do not have a crock pot (just added one to our registry, though!) so I am enjoying all of these recipe suggestions!

    - What is your favorite food? I LOVE food. Seriously, I could eat all the time. So it's hard to pick a favorite, but I really love Thai food. I order Thai at least once a week and I don't think I could ever get tired of it.

    - What is your second favorite food? The enchiladas from this Mexican place in Hoboken. We go there about once a week and it is SO. GOOD. It's super tiny but it is the best mexican I've ever had. Now whenever I go to other Mexican places the food just doesn't seem good anymore! I've been spoiled by this place.

    - What do you absolutely hate? Cilantro. Which is ironic since it's in a lot of Thai and Mexican food, but I cannot eat it. I ask for things without it. I can eat just about anything, but I HATE cilantro. I actually read an article a few years ago that an intense dislike of cilantro has been shown to be a genetic thing--some people are genetically predisposed to think it tastes horrible. I think I must be one of those people, although my FI makes fun of me and says, "Of course when you don't like something it's a genetic trait, not just that you think it tastes bad." haha

    - Is there anything you like to cook? Is there anything you hate to cook? I love to cook pretty much anything. I especially love cooking pies, cakes, and cookies, all from scratch (especially pie crusts, so delicious and so easy to make from scratch!) I also like cooking enchiladas, chicken piccata, pork tenderloin, and these delicious turkey burgers from Martha Stewart that have swiss cheese, scallions and mustard in them. Almost like little mini meatloafs (meatloaves?).

    - What kinds of foods would you like to learn how to cook? I would love to learn how to make cakes look pretty. They taste good, but looks-wise they are pretty plain. I'm not very artistic, though, so I don't know if fancy decorating is really feasible for me!

  • My mom just gave me her crock pot because she never used it.  I am going to have to save all these recipes!

This is the first one I'm going to try first:

    Slow Cooker Bottom Round

    Directions:

    1
Place beef roast in slow cooker.
    2
    Season with garlic and peppercorn.
    3
    Add onions, carrots, and potatoes.
    4
Pour Worcestershire sauce and BBQ sauce on top.
    5
Cook on low for 8 hours.

    What is your favorite food?
Mexican food is absolutely my favorite food ever.  I am also quite fond of sushi.

What is your second favorite food?
Homecooked food.  Warm, yummy homecooked meals are awesome.  Chicken is probably my favorite.

    What do you absolutely hate?
Nuts.  I'm deathly allergic to cashews and almonds so I try to avoid them all in general.  I'm trying to learn to love vegetables. It's actually going pretty well.  I used to hate them.

Is there anything you like to cook?Is there anything you hate to cook?
I really like cooking casseroles because they make so many leftovers.  At some point I will post my chicken & rice casserole, which is amazing.

I'm not a big fan of cooking breaded things because I always make such a mess!

What kinds of foods would you like to learn how to cook?
I would love to learn any new and unique things.  I can only make 10-15 things well so I'd love to expand my menu.

  • FI and I work opposite shifts so I love me some crockpot meals so he can have something hot when I'm not home!

The current favorite is Jerk chicken:
Blend the following in Magic Bullet (or food processor):
1 lg onion cut into chunks
    1t ground ginger
    1/2t allspice
    2T ground mustard
    1t black pepper
2T red wine (or balsamic vinegar if no open red wine)
    2T soy sauce
    2 cloves garlic
This will form a thick paste, add a little water to make it more sauce-y (maybe 1/4C)

This is enough for I would say up to 3 lbs of chicken, but I have used as little as 1lb and it doesn't matter. You just might need to add a little more liquid for more chicken).
Thighs are best.  Thigh filets will do.  Not sure about chx breasts...I usually don't crock pot white meat.

    Cook on low 6-8hrs

We usually have with brown rice or coconut rice.

    - What kinds of foods would you like to learn how to cook?
I suppose fish bc FI likes it but I can never make it for him because I don't know how!
