How soon should save the date go out?

I'm getting married new years day. How soon should my std get mailed since it's a holiday?

General rule of thumb is 6-9 months before the wedding.  Since yours is on New Years, you should allow extra time.  I would send them out as soon as possible.

Since that can be an expensive time for travel, I'd get them out ASAP to give people plenty of time to look for flights and hotels. (Personally I like putting travel alerts on certain websites, which email me with good deals to the places I specify. It can take a few months to get a price I like.)

I guess I would wait until the 9 month mark, or even 8.  I just feel like getting them out this early, guests might misplace it or forget about it.  I know I would!  I think better advice is to be sure to get your invites out a little on the early side (like 8-9 weeks instead of the usual 6), because that will be late Oct/early Nov which is when people generally start thinking about their holiday plans.
