place cards vs. master seating chart

My fiance and I are having a buffet dinner and are leaning towards not having escort cards and instead a master seating chart so that people will sit at assigned tables but can choose their specific spot.  If we do it this way, we would not use name placecards and just create a master seating chart.

Is this kosher?  Is it common?  Thoughts?

Re: place cards vs. master seating chart

  • Lots of people assign tables and not seats, which I actually prefer. You could still do escort cards with guests' name and table number on them (what we did), or skip the cards and have maybe an alphabetical list of guests typed up in a nice font with their table numbers next to their name.

I have also seen those big charts arranged by tables with all the guests seated at the table listed underneath. I do think it's easier to find your name on a huge list if it's alphabetized though.

You can do either. We're doing escort cards and assigning only by table.

We did a single seating chart -- with table assignments (no specific seats) listed -- and it worked out just fine.
