Wedding Invitations & Paper

Invitation/RSVP timing for holiday wedding?

We're getting married Labor Day weekend. Being a popular get-outta-town holiday, I want to give our guests a little extra time to make their plans to stick around town that weekend. So, when should I send them?

Our RSVP cards are another big question mark. We are musicians, 90% of our guests are our musician friends, so we're asking everyone to play music for us at our reception. Our RSVP cards, instead of having a choice of entree 1/2/3 etc., say "would you like to play music" and if so "what song". We'd like to get all of these back sooner than later so we can organize who is going to play when and with which other musicians. So, when should we ask for the RSVPs? I read that the norm is 3 weeks or so, but is it rude to ask for them as much as 6 or even 8 weeks in advance?

    1) Sent save the dates so people know the date.
    2) You shouldn't ask your guest to play music at your wedding. It can be seen as making them work. It is also a logistical disaster.
    3) Yes 6 weeks is to early. RSVPs should be due no earlier than 4 weeks, depending on when your cater needs final numbers.

  • These musicians are our close friends that we both play music with all the time. In this circle of working musicians, to play music with us and for us at our wedding is the most natural, no-brainer thing anyone could think of. It would break out into a jam session anyway if we weren't providing an open stage. I'm not too worried about logistical issues - our venue is a music club, the equipment will all be in place, the musicians are pros, the sound system is top notch as is the engineer. So I'm just thinking of the easiest way to set up who is playing when is to get the RSVPs a little sooner. Maybe 6 weeks is a little much...maybe 4 would work.

Anyway...so how about the invitations? I'm thinking May?
  • May is way to early. Invites are 6-8 weeks out.
