Addressing Invites

Is a felt pen the best for addressing invites? Obviously ballpoint is a bad idea. I just worry about it smearing as I write it. What is the best pen type for addressing invites?

Re: Addressing Invites

  • Can you go to Michael's and get a calligraphy pen?  It would look lovely.

You can also use a ballpoint pen if you'd like.  The important part is that the invitations are hand addressed in your best handwriting.
  • I agree with PP to try a calligraphy pen. But honestly, any pen that doesn't smear would probably be just fine.  Its a small detail people may not even notice since the envelopes usually get tossed.
  • If you want to avoid writing all together you can always go to a place like Staples or Officemax and purchase blank address labels then in Microsoft word or if you have the whole MS suit I would use publisher.....make up your own address labels....you can use different fonts and even add a cute small picture.  That is what I am going to do because I have horrible hand writing lol

  • Please note though that using address labels on wedding invitations is considered inappropriate etiquette.  It's not the biggest deal, but it is the first impression of your wedding that guests will get.  If you can avoid using them I would.
  • How about using a mail merge program to use a font and laser print to print the addresses directly on the envelope?
  • I would rather have the guests be able to read the invite...I dont' think it's rude I have seen many people who used labels.

  • Many people may have used labels but that doesn't mean that the use was correct.

I don't know that breaking etiquette equals rude.  It's a bit impolite though particularly if you know that what you're doing is against etiquette.  There are tons of options out there so that the guests can read the envelope.  Labels should really be a last resort.
  • Although I am a calligrapher, I do not want to lobby for calligraphy, but do want to lobby for hand addressing---no matter how bad your handwriting is! I think labels on wedding invitations, even clear ones with a beautiful font,  take a good deal away from what should be a special----and personal---invitation. To me, it just sets the completely wrong tone. You spend time and energy---and money!---- on the invitation....take a moment to address it yourself, or with a friend. Or ask a friend with great handwriting to make that their present to you instead of a toaster! :)
As to pens, unless you know how to do calligraphy just use a regular pen, not a calligraphy pen. The calligraphy pen will just make your handwriting look funny, (in my opinion). People who love you will not mind your handwriting!
