Wedding Invitations & Paper

question on time

My ceremony starts at 5pm, with cocktails to follow at 6p and dinner/dancing after that.  I read online that the proper way to write 5pm is "five o'clock in the afternoon".  But then I also noticed a lot of samples writen "five o'clock in the evening".  My only apprehension with writing afternoon instead of evening is that it sounds more casual.   Are either OK to use?

Re: question on time

  • Technically 5pm is afternoon.  Evening starts at 6pm.

If you're nervous about afternoon sounding too casual; don't write anything after the time because it's clear that it's not a 5am ceremony.  "five o'clock" is fine.

Lastly, having a late ceremony and depending on your invite style and venues; guests should be able to get the idea of how formal your wedding is.
  • Actually, neither of those is correct.

You would just say 5 o'clock. No evening, or afternoon. Five IS the evening, but you don't need to put that on the invitations (unless you really think a guest will show up at 5am :)  )
