Wedding Invitations & Paper

Invite help

Hi all,
I'm really not at all crafty, but I want to keep the cost of my invites down. I've perused Etsy and it looks like it would be a lot cheaper to ask someone to design my invitations for me, but then get the materials and print myself.

Any suggestions on how to do about 100 of the pocket fold invites (the ones where the actual invitation is in a folder and the reception card, RSVP and directions/map and whatever is in staggering heights on the side.

I really don't want to spend much more than $300 for everything associated with the invites EXCEPT postage.

Is this possible to find on Etsy, or will I have to do some of the work myself. Any and all suggestions are welcome. I'm so clueless.

TIA!!!

Re: Invite help

  • This is what we did.  I went to cardsandpockets.com and bought all the paper supplies while they were running a sale.  I printed the invite card myself at work (I didn't put any kind of design, just text in pretty font).  I also printed the inserts in the same font.  You can get free fonts from dafont.com.  Then I bought one of those card cutter things where you put the paper in and swipe the little razor to trim them perfectly.  Then I bought glue dots and assembled the whole thing.  I wanted postcard inserts for the RSVPs, so they had to be trimmed down a little to fit size.

I spent about $300-350 to make about 150 invites.

It wasn't hard at all, but it was really time consuming.  My sister came over and we drank wine and did it one Saturday.  I think we probably spent about 6 hours.

You may also want to post this on the DIY board.  They helped me a lot with this.
  • I spent $180 or so on materials, including pocketfolds, from cardsandpockets.com.  It will make 75 invites, plus menus, programs, etc.  I bought a graphic from an Etsy seller, but did the invite design myself.  Part of the design is in my bio (under templates).  I like doing that sort of thing, so I found it pretty easy.  You could definitely get an Etsy seller to do the design for you, but you'll need to work with them on exactly how it should be printed so that you get the maximum usage out of the cardstock you buy.

  • Check out the girl who I just had design my Christmas Cards!  She has an ETSY shop full of wedding designs.  I know she takes designs and makes them fit the budget each customer has.  I printed my own Christmas cards but had her design it. http://www.etsy.com/shop/sondrasink
  • I recently asked my friend where she got her invites from (her wedding was in August) and she got hers from Michaels. Not sure if there are any around you, but they have a nice selection!

  • Cards and Pockets is having a sale on pocketfolds right now, I just got the e-mail about it.  25% off pocketfolds, just put the word "pockets" into the coupon space at checkout.

With that being said, I did what you are thinking.  I had someone on etsy design the invitation and inserts for me and send it to me in a pdf (this cost me about $30).  I then bought the materials from cards and pockets (about $150) and assembled them myself.  I ended up printing them off at kinkos because my printer was not doing the job (about $80).  So for 75 invitations it cost me about $260 for pocketfolds that look very professional.  Info in my bio about the etsy designer who made my invites, I hightly recommend her!

  • I bought 12x12 cardstock from Michaels in Black and then folded them and glued them into my own pocket folds. Yes, it was time consuming but with 2 bottles of wine and 2 great bridesmaids and my stepmom it worked out wonderfully! I got everything when it was on sale I think I spent a total of $100 on materials and then whatever postage will be - UGH. How much is it to send overseas?

  • I didn't do the invites myself, but ordered mine from Magnetstreet.com. I spent just over $200 for 100 invitations. They always have discount offers and the invites are really nice and customizable.
  • I did mine on vistaprint.com.... for 200 invitations and response cards (including generic white envelopes) I spent around $100. I love the way they turned out! I just picked a fancier design. You can customize the font and spend a little more and get matching envelopes. And it wasn't time consuming, took me 20 min start to finish :)
  • i did mine on vistaprint also (= spent $85 with the invites and response cards (50 of each) with generic white envelopes... i love them but i would warn you: they are very casual looking because i did not go for the linen paper (should have as it was just $4 more for the whole batch!!) - i am having a very casual wedding though so it fit me just fine - good luck
