Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh

anozer newbie

hi all!my first time posting to the board...I just got engaged at the end of September and am currently planning a wedding in Pittsburgh while living in Cali... (sometimes I wonder what i'm getting my self into)My FH and I both went to Pitt, and his family is all there, so a wedding in the 'burgh was a no brainer. needless to say, i'll be petitioning for all the advice I can get! Does anyone have any recommendations or dire warnings I should know of? Thanks! - Moslifyi: the mode of operation is a mantra of "what would james bond do?"

hi & welcome! my only suggestion is watch out when the other girls arrive-they hate slang and typos. me on the other hand-bring it on! i chuckled when i saw the title of your post! i feel like it needs a good LOLcat to go with it! :) congrats on the engagement! there are a handful of girls that planned their pittsburgh weddings from afar, so i'm sure they will be able to help you bunches with advice! our wedding is new years day at the lemont, so that's always my #1 suggestion! where are you in cali? i can't begin to explain how jealous i am!

Hello! Welcome and congratulations!  I am planning my wedding from Maryland, but it hasn't been to bad, especially since I'm from Pittsburgh originally.  Do you have any of your vendors or venues yet?  Have you picked out a dress?  please share any details!

If you are having a lot of out of towners, look for a site where you can get married and host a reception. Saves cost of transportation, and allows more time to celebrate.  More than anything make yourself and future husband happy!  My wedding is Thanksgiving weekend, will let you know who my vendors work out...

thanks! honestly, i have nearly nothing done yet. my goal is to get a venue booked before the end of the month. (yikes)as far as that goes, I was looking at the LeMont, the Grand Concourse, or the Sheraton at Station Square. 26summer - no dress yet - but i'm going to make a first attempt on 11/6 with a friend of mine who is also engaged. She suggested dresses and martinis and that was all the fuel i needed to procrastinate a little bit more ;-)jennybean - what made the LeMont your #1? and how did you know I was thinking of lolcats? is my quirky showing?

Welcome and congratulations mosli! Are you having your wedding at Heinz Chapel? My daughter had her wedding last Friday at Heinz and the reception at LeMont.  We researched reception venues for almost 7 months before booking LeMont. The LeMont was the most inexpensive place for the reception in all of the places we looked at.  They do not charge a room fee, they don't charge anything to set up all of the place cards, escort cards, favors, etc.We were on a tight budget -- and didn't order the expensive meals.  The food was delicious and the guests are still raving about how great everything was. They [my daughter and SIL] went with a limited bar as well. The view from the ballroom at LeMont is spectacular!  Bill, the banquet manager and the staff were extremely nice and helpful  I highly recommend LeMont!

chrissyrmu - actually, about 1/2 of the people will be from out of town. i hope that your day is a smashing success! morainemom - thanks! I didn't know that the LeMont doesn't have an additional room fee and helps with setup... good to know. i'm not sure about the ceremony site. I really would like both parts to be at the same site. Do you know if the LeMont does that?

Hi and Welcome! I saw that you were interested in the Grand Concourse. I just had my reception there in June. They were so easy to work with and extremely affordable. Similar to what Pam wrote about the LeMont, there also is no room fee or setup fee. They also don't have a cake cutting fee, which ended up being a big money saver. I was also planning from out of town (NJ/Philly) and had no problem working with them. We had also looked at the LeMont, but the G.C. suited our style better. If you want to see pictures of the G.C. setup for a reception, take a look at my bio.

LOL, you def need to create an LOLcat for yourself! that was what i thought of-it's nice to know i wasn't out in left field! ;) our reasons for making the lemont our #1 were pretty much what pam (morainemom) just noted. in addition, we live on mt washington so it was a great way to incorporate our home in to our wedding. there are fees for traying cookies, or you can tray them yourself. we liked the view, that there was no fee to book the room (just a deposit, but it counts towards the overall cost), the flexibility and decor. our runner up was the grand hall at the priory. it was really FI's first choice, but i personally felt it was a bit too "cold" but it was beautiful. the view was really what did it for me. it's such an elegant venue that we found to be the cheapest around. we looked at the sheraton as well. i personally didn't like the shape of their front room, the one that faces the river. it was also fairly pricey, so we couldn't really justify it. but their banquet room with the view is very pretty.

Welcome, and congrats on your engagement! I'm no help on venues, as my reception was at a firehall, but I did plan OOT as well (from the DC area). It all works out and comes together. Good luck as you begin your planning!

oh yeah! i forgot about that question, thanks for helpin out pam!! that is a yes on the ceremony. they will be set up for the ceremony and the flip it for us right after. they said it takes about 10 min, cuz they have the tables set up already they just pull them out from behind the partition. i believe it's $2 or $3 per person for the ceremony. $2 i believe.

Welcome! I planned my wedding from Arizona/Texas and while it can seem a little overwhelming to be so far away, my biggest advice is to just be organized and stay on top of things. I didn't leave a whole lot until the last minute and that really made a difference!I had my reception on the Gateway Clipper and I LOVED it. I know you can also have the ceremony there as well.Happy planning!

    Hi! Nice to "meet" you!
  • edited December 2011
Nice to meet you and congratulations!I had my wedding in September and planned it from Massachusetts.  It's not easy, but if you are well organized and can make at least one or two long trips to Pgh before the wedding, you should be in good shape. Most of my guest list was OOT, too, so I would also add that if you think people will make a full trip out of your wedding weekend (arrive or stay an extra day) be prepared to share with them ideas of things to do in the city.  You can get visitor's guides and such.  It was a big hit for us because a lot of people hadn't ever been to Pgh and really wanted to see the area.

Hi, welcome, and yes, we love all sorts of stuff! Some of us get annoyed with constant typos and terrible grammar, but I could tell your subject line was an intentional typo.Oh, and here's a dire warning for ya: jbean has pretty much told us she doesn't like the board and considers us a bunch of mean, self-proclaimed etiquette queens, but has the gall to say WE are snarky. Just sayin'. :-)

Hi and welcome! As you can see, much of this board has recently turned into an ongoing, clicky, high-school drama, girl fight.  Good luck planning! :)

I'm not sure how you can say that Angela.  Other than JBean constantly "warning" everyone about the mean, snarky people on this board, I think everyone has been very supportive to each other.  Some of us may be good friends off the board, but I don't feel I ever act any differently to everyone else.

Wow, Angela, why don't you tell us how you really feel? ;-) I respectfully disagree and I honestly have no problem with anyone else on the board. Jbean just continues to get me all riled up, and I take responsibility too, because I let her do it.

All I can say is that JBean shuold let new knotties make up their own minds about this Board. JBean - seriously, your comment just seemed unnecessary.

I personally have no problems with anybody on this board.  People's comments toward eachother just irk me sometimes.  If it's a deserved comment, then fine, but sometimes things are just brought up out of nowhere to stir up drama.  It just gets old.

i was merely warning her. when the last newbie came on and said "gurls" in her thread-you all went nuts! i didn't want her to feel bad. and i'm snarky-towards certain people, because like angela said-this board has turned in to one big clique. however-i will apologize for the comment. except the last time i said something and left it up to the newbie to make her own decision, i got blasted with an email in my personal inbox asking me why i would say such a thing. i was leaving it up to that knottie to make her own decision. so which is it? me thinks you girls just don't like that i give back to you what you dish out to others. when you start causing other knotties to be afraid to post that have weddings long in advance to plan, i feel that possibly the point of this board has become forgotten. those girls that are afraid to post exist-and they are afraid for valid reasons.
