Seamstress/Tailor - designing my own dress

My grandmother, mom and aunt have all offered me their wedding dresses!  I love bits and pieces of each and I'd like to work with a steamstress or tailor who can help me design my own gown from all of this lovely fabric.  Does anyone have suggestions on how I can go about doing this?  Has anyone ever designed their own dress?  Do you know a good seamstress or tailor in the Pgh area that can help me?  Also, my initial thought is that this would be a cheaper route to go, but my concern is that it may cost more than a new dress!  Thoughts, please!

Try Clarissas in the South Side.  They are really good with everything!  GL

I had friends in HS design their own prom dresses with Sewing by Betenna.  Her website says headpieces, but I know she at least used to do gorgeous gowns.http://www.yellowpages.com/info-1370859/Beteena-Sewing-By

Ditto Clarissa's.  They made me a custom tiara and it was absolutely beautiful!  It's no dress but their work there is amazing! GL and let us know how it goes! :)

As far as cost, my guess is designing your own will still be cheaper.  I think there are so few women who get gowns that need minor (<$50) alterations that the cost of a dress plus alterations will be more expensive than you paying a seamstress to reconstruct a new gown from the ones you already have.  Let us know how it goes!
