Wedding Invitations & Paper

Addressing the invitations?

Okay - how do you feel about addressing the envelops with "Mr, Miss, Mrs" or "Mr and Mrs John Smith", etc?  I know it's etiquette and the formal way to do it but it seems a little unnecessary?  We're having a small wedding (maybe 70-80 people?).  I don't want to be rude if this is the norm, it seems old-school.  What do you think?

  • The size of the wedding does not determine which bits of etiquette you should follow.  The formality of the wedding CAN play a part.  However - the proper way is:

    Outter envelope:

    Mr. and Mrs. John Smith

    Inner envelope:
    Mr. and Mrs. Smith
    Miss Smith

Just because something is "old school" doesn't mean it's bad, etc.  I WANT my wedding to be a little bit formal.   I WANT our invitations to be taken seriously.  I WANT my guests to notice that we've gone to a lot of trouble to do thinks the right way as much as possible.  In short - I WANT it to feel like a wedding - not just any old party.  And, I think using proper titles is part of that.

Dresses may be easier to take in than let out, but guest lists are not. -- kate51485
  • Yeah. It doesn't have to do with small vs. large. It is more about formality. If you have having a very casual wedding, you can do "John and Jane Smith." Personally I'm doing "Mr. and Mrs. John Smith."

But in my family, we send cards for everything (just got a Valentine's Day card from my dad) and even as a kid everything was addressed to me as "Miss Meredith Lastname." So I see it as the way you send mail, especially personal/social mail. (I don't expect my bills to be addressed like that, for example.)
