Wedding Invitations & Paper

Paper trimmer - recommendations?

Can anyone recommend a good paper trimmer, preferably one that costs less than $50?  I'm not sure yet if my printer will be able to handle pre-cut insert cards (waiting for my samples from Cards and Pockets), so I am researching alternatives.

If I can find a good trimmer to cut 80-100lb cardstock, I might even just order the larger paper uncut.

Edit: Oh, and which is better for cutting invitations, rotary trimmers or guillotine trimmer?  Or does it matter?

TIA!

Re: Paper trimmer - recommendations?

  • I bought this orange one from Michael's for about $10 and it worked fine.  It was for scrapbooking and you slide the little razor up and down a track.  I used the standard inserts from CardsandPockets and trimmed them down so they would be tiered.

Unless I misunderstand and you're doing something more complicated, you really don't need to spend much money on this.
  • Thanks, that's good to know.  No, I'm just going to be cutting the inserts down to size, and just wanted to make sure that I had a paper cutter/trimmer that would cut precisely and squarely.  If it'll only cost $10, all the better.  I just wasn't sure if there was a big difference in quality between the cheaper ones I've seen and the way more expensive ones, so I thought I'd check in with you guys!

  • The bigger they are, the more accurate, usually.  The slider types also cut only one sheet at a time.  And, you need to be sure that the one you get is long enough.  The little ones don't fit the 11" direction of a standard sheet of paper.

BUT the slider ones can be fitted with different types of blades (like a scoring blade) to let you do some other interesting things.  Their cutting blade has a tendancy to slip side to side on the tracks just a tiny bit.  I'm bothered by that enough that I have both types, depending on what I need to do.

I got this one on a great sale ($20), and I love it:  LINK

  • Thanks squirrly!  We have a rotary trimmer at work, which I could probably borrow, but it's very old and I fear the blade is too dull (and I have no idea if there are any replacement blades).  Very good point about only being able to cut one sheet at a time (I may end up obsessive enough to want to do that though, haha)!

I'll check out your link - thanks so much!

  • I didn't google to find the best price on that one, FYI.  I just grabbed the first link to it that I could find.  I did get it from Amazon, though, months ago.

  • You can also get the 8.5 x 11 cardstock from Cards and Pockets (love them, by the way) so you know the paper will coordinate with your invites - you'll know exactly what to expect.

Fiskers has a really nice paper cutter too.
We had a great one at my old office.  The invited me back to cut my invites there.
  • yes, the one from Micheals is good and hobby Lobby has some good ones also !
  • Great, thanks, I will check out those paper cutters.

I think I am going to order some more samples from Cards and Pockets tonight/tomorrow.  I got the invitation kit sample already (arrived Friday) and it's really helpful to see everything, but yeah, the pre-cut ones won't let me print to the edge, so it looks like trimming down the full sheet card stock will be the way to go.

I lucked out in that our map is vertically oriented, otherwise it would be teeny trying to fit on the Signature inserts, they are soooo skinny!  But none of the other pocketfold styles work as nicely  to me.  Overall the look is quite stunning, though... I love pocketfolds!

Thanks again for all the help everyone!
