Wedding Invitations & Paper

Invitation etiquette...wording

I want to DIY our invitations.    I want an opening tag line referencing our favorite song (also a reflection of our relationship and theme for our wedding) "Johnny and June" by Heidi Newfield.  I just want part of the chorus on there, short and simple, then follow by the actual invitation wording.  Is there an etiquette to using a portion of a song...do I need copyrights, etc???

Re: Invitation etiquette...wording

  • It really doesn't belong on an invitation.  Put it on your website.  On your programs.  Have the lyrics read as part of the ceremony if you want.  But random phrases don't belong on invitations.

  • I'm doing the same thing w/ a movie line. I understand that it's not the proper thing to do, however, we're pretty laid back people & so are all of our guests. We're trying to make everything reflect us and be different than other weddings, and if this means breaking a few rules, so be it.

  • There's a snippet of lyrics that I really want to include from the Beauty and the Beast stage show, so they'll go on the cover of the program.  You don't really realize it from just listening, but anything more than a line or two is REALLY wordy, so regardless of etiquette it just makes the invitation look cluttered.  People tend to skim invitations, so you want to keep it to essential information only.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284

Exactly.  The program is a great place for that, and I totally understand wanting your wedding to reflect you.  But. . . to me, the real estate on the invite is 1) limited, and 2) sacred.  Ok, sacred is a strong word, but you get what I'm saying.  It gets wordy, and fluffy, and busy, and the real message gets lost - you are GETTING MARRIED and want people to come.  That's ALL the invitation needs to say.  All the other fun stuff goes someplace else.

  • No, you do not need permission to use something like that for a non-commercial purpose.

I want to use "two lives have begun now, two hearts become one now," but I don't think FI is a fan of using anything from Beauty and the Beast.  <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-frown.gif" border="0" alt="Frown" title="Frown" />
