For those who have gone dress shopping...

how many dresses did you try on? I have my first appointment at Davids Bridal tomorrow, and I have a list (I'm always one of those people with a list!) of 11 dresses that I want to try. Is this too many? too few? Am I trying to plan it too much? I just have no idea what to expect. Thanks, ladies!

Re: For those who have gone dress shopping...

  • I'm sure you can try on as many as you'd like.  I came in with an idea of what I wanted and just picked dresses to try from there.  I probably tried on about 5 dresses at David's bridal but I ended up finding my dress in another bridal salon!

  • atleast 10 at each salon. AND the one that was 'the dress' was one I wouldn't have even thought to try on unless my BF/MOH brought it to me to try...the ones I liked in pictures/magazines didn't really look the same on my shape since I'm short

  • I'm also really short and petite, so I'm worried that some that I like online won't work well. I'm perfectly willing to let the consultant and Mom pick out some for me, too. I just wanted to make sure I didn't have too many in the first place, but that makes me feel better. Thanks!

  • Tried on about 5 at DB's, about 14 at a second salon, and maybe 15 at a third salon.  14 and 15 were way too many, I think...I was starting to get overwhelmed at those two places.  My best advice would be if you put a dress on, and you know it's not the one, take it off immediately and put it out of your head so you don't get caught up in all of your options.
  • I think I tried on about 8 dresses total

  • I went dress shopping a few weeks ago and I think I  tried on 10 dresses at the first store, and about 5 at Alfred Angelo.

Yet another short girl here, and I can see difficulty in getting a dress for me because most manufacturers don't adjust the bodice for height, they only take up the bottom, so the "waist" of the dress hits me much lower than it should.

I am going to a Maggie Sottero Trunk Show in June and I hope they have the dress I've been drooling over at the show (Bonita).  I called to each of the authorized retailers between here in Fort Myers, Tampa, Orlando, and some of the places in Miami.  NO ONE has this dress for me to try on!
  • The first time I went for fun I tried on 3 at David's Bridal and then I went to Alfred Angelo just to try on the try I've loved in July and tried on 2 dresses there and ended up buying the one I've been wanting. So in total, 5.
  • I tried on like... 13 of them. I'm so picky. I knew the "one" when I tried it on (second) but they insisted I try on more. I said ok fine. lol

  • remember to keep an open mind when you shop, the one you love may be totally different then the style you thought you wanted. I think I tried on about 14 dresses at 3 salons. The last salon I tried on at said she recommends no more then 6 dresses at one appointment before you really get overwhelmed and confused. But the 1st one I put on at that salon was the dress.

  • i tried on a few in each different style...dresses with pickups, apliques,  chiffon, silk, tafita (i cant spell to save my life), mermaid. like the PP said, keep an open mind. something u think u might not like may be THE DRESS. i never thought id like a drop waist and i went with that over everything else i tried on.
  • the dress I chose was the 2nd one I put on..but I went ahead and tried on about 5 more, just to make sure.

you might be surprised which one ends up being yours! remember: the dress chooses the girl, not the other way around!

just make sure you can't stop smiling when you think you found the perfect dress -- it should make you feel perfect!

  • The first dress I tried on was the one I ended up picking.  At first I thought there was no way I would get the first dress I tried but after trying on about 6 more at that salon and about 6-8 dresses at two more salons, I kept going back to the first dress in my mind.  So I went back, tried it on for my mom, FMIL and FSIL  - they loved it and that was all she wrote!

  • Thanks, ladies! That does make me feel better. I just didn't want to walk in there with so many in mind, if that's not the norm. I'm leaving for the appointment soon, and I'm excited! :)

I tried on about 35-40 dresses at 4 different places (and ended up choosing the first dress I tried on!).  I would definitely try on dresses that aren't on your list and even ones you think you won't like cuz you never know how they'll look on you.  A good consultant will be able to give you other dresses that are similar to the styles you have on your list.   Good luck and have fun!

  • I tried on about 10 at David's Bridal and another 7 or so at a local shop. I'm actually going to another store this morning to hopefully finish this ordeal. I may be the only girl who absolutely HATES wedding dress shopping! I hate having to squeeze into too-small dresses or be clipped into too-big dresses. I hate having to get dressed with a stranger in the room pushing and poking at me to get the dress on. I hate having to step out into the middle of the store in a dress that doesn't fit right for everyone to gawk at. It's freaking tiring for sure! And I feel bad because my mom keeps having emotional reactions to some of these really nice dresses and it's just not happening for me. I just want a dress that fits me right, is affordable, and is beach-friendly. I think I must be missing the wedding dress gene or something! haha

  • I would limit it to less than 10 per visit, or you will be a bit overwhelmed (and it takes a lot of time to try on each dress, take pictures, etc.).  I went to David's Bridal first and tried on about 5 or 6 dresses.  I've had 3 additional appointments at 3 different salons, and I've tried on about 5-6 dresses at each of them.  (I spread out appointments over a few months, you don't want to go crazy!)  I found my gown at the last salon, and ended up trying it on again after I went through all the other dresses (you should do this with any dress you think you like, just to keep it fresh in your memory).  When you finally find "the dress", you'll definitely know!  I didn't want to take it off. :)

</div><div>I'm really petite as well!  The mermaid/trumpet gowns and the A-lines with a dropped waist seemed to look then best on me.  I really loved the look of the ball gowns but the really just didn't suit me, they pretty much swallowed me up!  Everyone is different though try on the different styles.  But being 5'2 and 110lbs, I'm pretty small and the other styles just seemed to work best!</div>

I don't think 10 is too many for your first stop because after trying on a few you'll figure out what you like and don't like. I had probably picked out 20 dresses at David's Bridal but didn't try on half of them because I had figured out I didn't like pick-up or straps or ballgowns or whatever.
I also agree that a good consultant will pay attention to your likes and dislikes and start to pull you dresses based from that. Keep and open mind and good luck!

I'm scared to go wedding dress shopping.... My sister/MOH keeps trying to set up dates to go but I always have the excuse that I have to work (which is true). I'm worried that A) I won't find anything I LOVE and B) since my parents are paying for the dress, that I'll fall in love with something they can't afford then I'll feel guilty and it'll be a nightmare. Plus, the thought of me wearing white for an entire evening is nerve wracking. I'm not very graceful and I just might need a bib throughout dinner just to make sure!!!

  • I think I tried on every dress in my size in the store. Plus the dresses on my list that they didn't have in my size but I made them work. I think in order to make an accurate decision you need to try them all on so you can find what you don't want and what you do want.
  • i found a gorgeous dress on clearence and it was the first one i tried on...but it was way more formal then i had envisioned (but had all the details i had wanted).....i tried on a second dress that was lke what i had always pictured...and it just confirmed to me how much i loved the first dress...and then it was only 500$ (will come to about 700 after alterations) insted of its original price of 1600$....i knew i couldnt find another one that was that good quality that i loved for that price so i stopped looking and got the first dress.
