Pre-Cana Engaged Encounter

I just wanted to let you all know that FI and I did our engaged encounter retreat this past weekend.  I had mixed feelings going into the weekend and wasn't really looking forward to it.  Well we had a great time!  We met a bunch of other really nice couples and got to spend some quality alone time without the stress of work, family, and regular day life.  They even provided us with some beer and wine Sat. night and we had a little bit of a social gathering with everyone.  I just wanted to write about it b/c I know some people were talking about having to go a few months ago.  So hopefully this eases any fears or concerns.  If you have any questions about it please let me know.  I also think its a great thing to do even if you're not Catholic and it isn't required.  The Catholic beliefs were not pushed on us at all this weekend and the focus was mostly between you and your FI.

Glad it went well!  Were you there Fri-Sun?  What were sleeping arrangements like?

Our pre-cana was better than expected too.  We did it in one long day here in Chicago and I think we got lucky with the people running it.  I'm not Catholic and FI is, and the couple who ran ours definitely wasn't pushy with beliefs either.  It was more about open communication.

I'm glad you liked it!  We did the Engaged Encounter in our diocese (Camden, NJ) since it fit in best with DHs work schedule.  We had the same experience as you, mixed feelings and then having a great time.  It's nice to hear that someone else enjoyed it as well.

We were there Friday night until about 3pm Sunday.  That was one thing that was surprising we got there at 7:30pm Friday and they started right in at 8 until about 11pm that night.  We each had our own room with a women's floor and a men's floor which is understandable but kind of silly because half the couples there, including us, already live together.  Ours was a lot about open communication too and each person's expectations of marriage in areas of finances, children, careers etc.  They also did a talk on arguing/fighting fairly with some rules which I thought were good tips!  So it was an overall good weekend!

That's so great to know - even though we wont be doing ours for a while, I've had some anxiety about it! I mean, I'm catholic but I HATE when people try to push their beliefs (even when they are your own) onto you. Which is probably one of the reasons that I had such an aweful experience at my catholic high school! Anyway, I'm very glad to hear that things went good for you and it wasn't as bad as you had expected!! :)

I'm glad I could help ease some of your concerns!  I was pretty nervous like butterflies in my stomach and everything when I got there but it all went away very quickly.  I think it helped that the two presenting couples we had were very great!  Good luck w/ yours!
