Engagement Gift HELP!

My parents are invited to an engagement party for the daughter of a friend of my mom's.  What would be a proper gift to take? The bride's father is a prominent surgeon and most likely this will be an upscale type of event.  My mom asked if I could ask my wedding website people what they think.

what about a decent priced frame or glassware (think, crystal...maybe?) from BBB/macy's?

are engagement gifts supposed to be totally different from wedding gifts in nature? like, are there certain things that you are "supposed" to buy as an engagement gift but not as a wedding gift?

I'm not going to be any help, C.  Out here you always give money for an engagement party, which is why I see them as a money grab and the main reason why I am so against them.

I'm not sure of the proper etiquette for gift giving at engagement parties, but I tend to agree with something crystal, like a picture frame or even an entertaining set. Two of the more high-end (IMO) wedding gifts we received were a 4 piece Mikasa entertaining set and a gorgeous Waterford double picture frame. I feel like you can't go wrong with something timeless and classic. HTH a little!

We received a lot of champagne for our engagement party, and I also got a wedding planner book, which was helpful.

What about something like this? (Or anything from this website - its my go to for great gifts!)

I'd say go with a nice bottle of wine or champagne, you can't go wrong there!

I'm 2 days late on this- but I have the perfect thing! We got an 'engagement book'  Its like a scrap book type thing.  Has you fill in little stories about your engagement period- the proposal, and planning.  Not a planning book, but more like a memior book type thing.  Let me know if you're Mom hasn't bought anything yet, and I can get you the name of it.
