Reception Dinner

Ok ladies I have a question!!  So I kind of had my heart set on a plated dinner.  But my mom and caterer said that might be kind of stuffy and suggested that I do a family style dinner.  So I was just wondering what everyone else was planning on doing and why they chose that!?

Re: Reception Dinner

  • We're doing plated, but only because we're having it at restaurant, so it makes the most sense.  We could have picked buffet, but I just thought that would take up unnecessary space.

  • I was at a company pic nic once that did a family style dinner and it was a nightmare. A lot of spilled items reaching to serve yourself, sleeves in food. Maybe if it was better organized it would be ok. I would go with plated or buffet.

  • we're doing a plated dinner but i am highly considering family style.
  • we're doing plated just because our wedding is a little more on the formal side and it's at a hotel.
we did family style at a work function and it was great! people really liked it because it's like buffet but you don't have to get up! it also get people at the table talking.

  • I think family style would work if you're not planning to do your wedding formal and you don't want people to get up for a buffet line. I think that family style is something that is becoming more popular at weddings. I really like how plates are decorated and presented when they are served (we are foodies) so we are definitely going to have a plated reception.

  • We are doing buffet. FI really wanted it. Family style is nice, but the food gets cold sitting on the table. My cousin did this at his wedding last year and some people complained about wanting 2nds but the food being cold.
  • We are doing buffet, mainly because our meal is DIY (with help, of course).  However, I went to a wedding this past fall that was family style (@ Maggiano's), and I thought it was awesome.
  • It depends on your wedding style. I had asked this question a little while ago and you ladies were SO helpful! If youre going for something more formal, do plated, if not, then buffet would be great too. The only reason we are doing plated ( aside from it being formal) is that the buffets tended to cost way more in our area, which is insane.
  • We are doing buffet because it is cheaper, but also it is the norm in our area for weddings.

  • most reception dinners i have been to...and ours...is going to be a family event at home...now since i dont live in the town that i am getting married in, it will be at my aunts house...or at a local restaurant. Either way its going to be quite casual, if its at her house it will be potluck with all the reletives if its at the restaurant, we will just be making normal reservations for the wedding party.
