Two problems and one (long) story

So back in November I lost my job.  Not a big deal as I found something else relatively quickly, I just don’t like it as much.  It is close to home so it is tolerable, though it doesn’t pay as much as I would like.  Plus there is this one guy who I think, thinks it’s his job to unload anything he doesn’t want to do on me.  So I am twice as busy as him and our boss thinks I don’t do anything.  So my initial plan was to tough it out past the wedding but I am not sure if I will last that long.

Now over the last 3 weeks my car has stalled out twice.  Luckily I wasn’t on a major road or in traffic.  The problem is that they can’t figure it out.  They think they know the problem and it will cost $500 to fix, but they want to be sure so they are running experiments on my car!! So now my check engine light is on all the time and I am freaked, lol.  On top of that I also need to fix a lot of suspension stuff to the tune of $2k.  I can afford it but not sure it is worth it on a car that is 14 years old.

So I would like to replace the car as it isn’t worth as much as the repairs but I don’t think that is feasible right now.

Now the only good news is that a place I talked to before I took my current job is interested in me again.  I know the place pays well from what I have heard from people plus they do 20% bonuses.  So I could potentially see a 30+% increase in my salary.  Only problem is that the job is in Northern VA and my commute would go from 20 minutes both ways to over an hour each way.

So right now I am going to start looking for a cheap used car to tide me over for a year or two as I don't want to take away from the wedding savings.  Ugh not fun.

Thanks for listening.

Re: Two problems and one (long) story

  • Sorry to hear about the job and car, that is no good, but hopefully you'll be able to find a cheap one soon. And that is good about the new job, but just make sure that you won't be paying your raise in gas money getting there and back.

  • That is the one major problem fear with that potential job is how much will I waste in gas and time.

That's a tough call! I'm sure whatever you decide will be for the best  :)

  • Go with your gut! If you think you'll be happy at the new job, go for it, but if the commute would offset the better job in a negative way, I'd consider it carefully. Personally, I'd rather have a less desirable job but be able to spend more time at home and less time commuting... but that's just me. Hope it all works out!!
