Location Issues... Gahhh...

So last night before the FI and I went to bed he had told me that everyone hrs at work are being cut including his...(super boo!!!) So now I am trying to find ways to cut our wedding budget down. I started thinking that maybe Mexico wasn't the place for us to get married and maybe we should stick to something in the U.S. I dont have money invested anywhere yet because of this issue... So now I am stuck with making the decision of where we are going to get married.... What would you do stay with your original plan or change your location? TIA

  • I would stick with the original plan, IMO, only because you're still saving a ton of money without having to have a shindig with a lot of people, vendors, food, etc.

If you did want to go local and save money, you could always do it the courthouse way or even in some sort of park or botanical gardens? You might just have to find a notary to marry you and can have a dinner with family/friends after like you'd planned?

    Just some thoughts :)

  • I been talking to FI about it today he told me not to worry and to go with the original plan... I guess I just worry too much about the $$$ and numbers...

I'm going to be biased, because I'm just not gung ho about DWs. Don't take that the wrong way, you should have the wedding you absolutely want.

Is the cut going to be permanent? I know that when I was working at Target, I would sometimes lose some hours if sales were down. But that would only last for a few weeks. And does the cost of the DW (plane tickets, hotel room, wedding itself, etc) make going away worth it? Which one is more cost-effective? Will you lose any deposits if you cancel the weddingmoon? You guys also need to figure out how important it is to you to get married by yourselves/in Mexico.

I think you need to break it down on a piece of paper or a spreadsheet, cost wise. Personally? I'd get married at home.

  • Well, money was the main issue we decided not to go with our original venue, but my situation is a bit different as we were still able to stay in the same general area.  If I remember correctly, it's just the two of you going?  I would say if you can't do Mexico now, you could always go for your 1st anniversary and renew your vows. :)  There are plenty of beautiful places to go in the US, but I'm not sure if any of them would actually be most cost effective than going to Mexico.  For example, I love Key West (it's absolutely gorgeous!), but it can definitely get expensive with all the airfare, car rental, and hotel stays.  Hopefully, they won't cut his hours permanently. :/
  • i worry about them too...good guy you have there :)
If for some reason you have to change, you might look into the outer banks in N. Carolina...my FBIL almost got married there...very pretty

  • I had to make an Excel spreadsheet just to keep track of our budget because I'm so anal, so don't feel bad!

  • @ pantherRN: We arent sure how long his hrs are going to be cut... When we were planning on doing our wedding in Nashville the venue by itself was 1250 and the catering was about 3500. That's not including all the little details as in flowers, cake, alcohol, photography, etc.... so in the end that why we chose to do a DW wedding....

@gapaple: It is going to be just the two of us....

  • Amber you have over a year honey relax. In the mean time do some price checking locally and see if it is more cost effective if not Mexico it is. Like Kat saidmake a spred sheet and compare then you wont have to guess the numbers will be right in front of you.

It sounds like you're saving money by doing the DW, and if it's what you want and your FI says it's fine then I stay stick with that!

If you decide to stay in the U.S. then the ladies have given great suggestions in PP  :)

I know right!! I am SO stoked that our E pic shoot is in 2 1/2 weeks!! AND I found the perfect mexican themed dress for that too at Marshalls for $13!! (white with little accents :)

    I digress lol..

If you wanna PM me your email I can send you the template I use? I'm a total planner and organized to the point of stupidity but it works...I keep track of our pay dates (the same times we work together) and then put our expenses, bills and in the end, the savings..and then with savings put how much will go into our Savings for the wedding. Then monthly I note costs we'll take $ our for :)

  • I would stay with the DW. I would think you're saving a lot by goign that route, and like daft said, you have a year. A year to save up for plane tickets and the hotel. Just breathe, and definitely make an excel spreadsheet if it will calm you down.

  • one thing to consider is if you have it stateside how many family and friends will be offended that they are not invited?? having it in mexico might actually be making it a lot cheaper!!
