NWR: Downstairs Neighbor email w/ Update- GRR

Ok, so the FI and I decided to start working out together in prep for the wedding. We went out tonight and got a cardio DVD that we can do together...no biggie. Well after we got done working out (8 to 8:30pm) I had to go to a meeting, long story short I just got home and had a shi*ty email from our downstairs neighbor, the emailed had been copied to our landloard--What gets me...she was too lazy to walk up stairs and let us know that she could here us...(which is the policy of our building--btw, we have SUPER thick floors)

Background note:, we live on the ground floor and her apartment is under a protionof our livingroom (it's a converted house). WE WOULD HAVE MOVED INTO ANOTHER ROOM if we knew she could here us...but she's one of "those" neighbors who complains about everything AND everyone...plus the crappy email? really? All it would have took was a knock at the door, etc. Anyhow, now I'm seriously "erked" (to be "pc")...sorry, just needed to vent.

*Update: She has my email b/c we all used to talk, everyone knows everyone in the building, there is only 5 units. We've been in the building the longest (and pay, by far, the most rent). We've lived there for 4 years, she's been there for 2.5yrs but she only moved under us this past fall.

...so I replied to her email apologising for the noise and that all she would have had to do (as she knows) is knock and we would have moved into another room...I GOT ANOTHER SNARKY EMAIL...she "shouldn't have to walk ALL THE WAY AROUND the house to knock on our door" --did i mentioned there is a back hallway where she just has to walk up her entrance stairs and there she would find an nside door for our apartment to knock on??...walk around the house, really?!  Anyhow, she also brought up that she already has to walk aroundthe house to take out her trash (as opposed to walking THROUGH the yard the the FI and I rent for our dogs, which is fenced and now padlocked b/c she wasn't closing the gates =  not good for curious pups who like to run ++ plus apparently our house must be like a city block or something for her to be SO inconvienced to walk around the house, grrr)

...Any how, back to this snarky email she sent...she neglected to "CC" to our landloard (funny huh?). So I "cc" it to him with my response (an "I apologise again, but if you don't knock on the door to let me know, its not my problem"-- email). I then emailed our landloard, separately, to tell him that we were not going to fight with the downstairs neighbor and that if we were such an nuicance to the building then we could move out. I asked him if he had any single family homes available and if not, then we were looking to him to resolve the issue b/c the downstairs neighbor wasn't willing to do so per building norms...

we'll be working out in our spare bedroom or office I guess (no one lives under those rooms)...it's not like we were meliciously trying to desterb her evening...though I must admit, I was indulging the idea at 1am this morning...lol...however, I wouldn't do this...

  • That's frustrating! How do your neighbors have your email? I don't even know the last names of my apt neighbors.

  • Yeah how did she get your email... I don't know any of my neighbors lol... Never really home too much to get to know them...

  • I don't know my neighbors either lol.  That is pretty crappy though.  She should have at least given you a chance to know you were doing something that annoyed her and correct it.  Some people shhhhssh.

  • Yeah I may even try to strike a compromise with her esp if you'll be living there a while, you know? Our neighbours here are younger guys and used to always have loud get togethers but we were 'fake nice' and went over one day to ask them about keeping it to certain times/nights and they were cool...if we would have yelled I'm sure it would have gotten worse

  • I totally know how you feel!  I used to live in a building with about 20 one-bedroom/studio units, and everybody was in your business.  I can understand that it might be annoying to her, but if you weren't doing it late at night, she should just have to deal with it.  Is she an old lady?  She definitely sounds like a cranky old lady to me.

My fiance and I rent a single family home just for this reason...we can do what we like when we like without having some annoying "neighbor" complain.  We're musicians and have tons of guitars, amps, keyboards, etc., and this allows us to practice whenever we want...and loud. :)

@ gpapale1 : yes, she is the only non-college student in the building (she's in her late 30s, early 40s >> but you can tell, she's lived a "hard" life)... she's a "local"...and if you know anything about Terre Haute, that's not exactly a complement...she is defintly the steriotypical Haution... (there are tones of great, educated, nice Hautions...but many more of them are the victom of a dying town --that is only still in existance due to my college-- I think she might resent all of us to begain with)...I don't want to sound like an academic snob or this to come off as  "I'm better then others"...that's TOTALLY not the case at all, it's just there is a LARGE difference in education/politness, etc. between students in the area and many of  "the locals"

  • FI and I had a similar problem only it was the people above us that were so loud. It seriously sounded like they were dropping boxes on purpose at 3am. Finally FI said something to him about it in passing and he apologized and didn't even realize that what he thought were small noises were really loud noises to us! As a person upstairs it is hard to judge what it sounds like for your downstairs neighbor especially when the floors are very thin. That girl should have knocked on your door and let you know.
