Attaching pew decorations?

For those of you having pew decorations - how are you attaching them?  I assume most places have requirements that you don't use anything that damages the pew (tape, glue, etc).

Since the chapel we are getting married at isn't super bright, I am planning on having plain white round paper lanterns (http://www.lunabazaar.com/cheap-paper-lanterns-white-6-inch-small.aspx) with lights inside.  I'll probably use lavender ribbon somehow as decoration/to help attach them.  

I've searched around a little bit and haven't found any ways of attaching them I'm thrilled about using...

I also can't decide whether I want the lanterns to be 100% free floating (as in not touching the pew at all) or resting against the pew.

So, for those decorating pews, how are you going about it?
