May 2012 Weddings

Ugh FMIL Vent

FI finished his undergrad degree in December 2010 and there was a small graduation-like ceremony, no caps, no gowns, no diploma. His parents (FMIL, FFIL), my parents and I attended.

He will participate in the formal graduation that will take place this May. His sister (FSIL) is graduating from undergrad on the same day. When this was discovered back in September it was decided that all of the female relatives will attend FSIL's graduation and all of the male relatives would attend FI's graduation. With the exception of FMIL who would attend FI's because it is her alma mater, and FFIL would attend FSIL's.

FMIL has now decided that because FSIL will not have as many people at her graduation as FI's that she would go to FSIL's instead of FI's, meaning neither one of his parents would be at his graduation. While the relatives attending both FSIL and FI's are about the same, 8 members of my family will be attending FI's graduation, according to FMIL, FI will have more people at his graduation than FSIL will, so she has to go to FSIL's.

This makes no sense because it's not like my family is choosing FI over FSIL, they wouldn't attend FSIL's graduation had it been on a different day anyway. When FI told his mom that it would mean a lot to him if she could be at his graduation she called him a baby, told him to stop whining, and said she already saw him graduate.

When it was discovered that FSIL and FI were graduating on the same day FI was going to attend the December graduation-like ceremony and not the one in May so the family didn't have to choose between him and his sister, but his mother told him that he should attend the May graduation and that she (FMIL) would attend his and FFIL would attend FSIL's.

Re: Ugh FMIL Vent

  • I'm sorry.  Your FMIL isn't coming off too lovely in this situation.  Either way if she goes or not at least he will be surrounded by you and your family.
