Ceremony & Reception Music

I've got a slow day ahead of me at work today, so I'm probably going to spend some time today checking out potential songs for our ceremony musicians/DJ. Has anyone given any thought to the songs you're using for things like the processional, recessional, bridal party entrance, first dance, etc.? I love reading all of the creative song ideas people have come up with, and I'm sure you ladies have some great ideas, so let's hear 'em!!

Re: Ceremony & Reception Music

  • I think the only ones I have thought about were our dance songs (first dance, last dance)...

I have it narrowed down to a couple that have meaning to us, Then by Brad Paisley is almost defintiely our first dance song.  And I have to decide between Living our Love Song by Jason Michael Carroll or When I Said I Do by Clint Black and his wife for the last dance song.

  • I can't wait to see everyone's answers to this! We don't have too much picked yet but our recessional song is going to be Life's a Happy Song from the Muppet Movie. I'm thinking of having the BMs walk down the aisle to I Won't Give Up by Jason Mraz. And we want our bridal party to enter the reception to Baby Don't Hurt Me from Night at the Roxbury.

  • So far, we've got the following picked out:

The groomsmen & my fiance will be walking in/lining up to a slow, acoustic version of "Here Comes Your Man" by the Pixies. We've got a guitar player and violinist lined up for the ceremony, and I can't wait to hear their take on this.
Bridal Party entrance: "You Make My Dreams" by Hall and Oates, and we're also going to work out a dance for them based off of the routine Joseph Gordon-Levitt does to this song in "500 Days of Summer".
First Dance: "Heavenly Day" by Patty Griffin.

I also plan on putting "Your Love is My Drug" by Ke$ha on our "must play" list for the reception, just because we both really like her, which is so embarrassing, hahaha. I'm really on the fence about the processional...in my head, I can see myself walking down the aisle to "Canon in D", but on the other hand, I feel like a guitar/violin version of "Tupelo Honey" by Van Morrison would be an awesome processional.
  • I am leaning towards "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong for the father/daughter dance and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole for our first dance.  Or "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz for our first dance.

    I love that version!!

And Ash, I think Brad Paisley and his songs are both adorable.
  • For our first dance we are thinking Blake Shelton's God Gave Me You. Our last dance will most likely be Lady Antebellum When You've Got a Good Thing. We are also incorporating Lady A's I Run To You (it's been my ringtone for FI since it came out) and DMB - Steady As We Go.

As for my father daughter dance I am going to start off with something sentimental and sappy (not sure what yet) and then I am having the DJ switch it to Squeeze-Tempted (by the fruit of another). I know that Tempted is in no way wedding related but when I was 2 my dad used to take me out on Saturdays (to give my mom a break) and he would play that song - I would always sing it in a baby voice and get most of the words wrong (picture a baby with curly hair in the carseat singing "tented by a foot of a nutta" haha)  but it has always been our thing since then.

  • Our first dance is gonig to be by a local band called the Floorwalkers, the song is called For the Better. I think we might do I Won't Give Up by Jason Miraz for our last dance. For the father daughter dance This Is Your Song by Elton John and I think I am going to do a special dance with my step dad also to You've Got a Friend in Me.

My younger brother will also be playing the guitar during the ceremony, but I'm not exactly sure what song yet.

For the processional I really want to do "Boat Song" by Jj Heller. Not sure about my ceremony entrance yet. I don't really want to walk in to Canon in D. I want to have "all you need is love" by the Beatles for the recessional.

Our first dance is "Constellations" by Jack Johnson (very personal reasons). I want to do our first dance right after our entrance, then after dinner, while cake is being passed out and eaten we're going to do another "first" (I already told FI he doesn't really have a choice here, haha) to "Still the One" by the Orleans so we can use the swing and ballroom dance lessons we took a few years ago. But about halfway through I want to DJ to invite everyone else out, so it dosn't feel like we're scamming for two firsts. My father daughter is going to be to "Isn't She Lovely" by Stevie Wonder (it'll totally make my dad cry!). Our last song is going to be "time of your life" by Green Day. Our summer camp we met at and got engaged at has the staff sing this song to acoustic guitar every summer for our closing campfire of the season, so it'll bring our whole relationship completely full circle.

We're going to do bridal party entrance songs too and we're doing hilarious songs picked to match something silly about each set as they come in. Our friends who got married a few years had a horrible DJ who played the monster mash twice at their May wedding reception, so they'll enter to that. Just silly things like that we want to incorporate. Show off our silly and humorous personalities.

  • Kelly I like the switch in songs. My dad had to go to a training in Oklahoma when I was younger and was gone for 3 months. Before he left he downloaded Every Rose has its Thorn (on Napster lol) and whenever I missed him I'd listen to it. I wanted to use it but didn't want to have to explain it so I may copy you and do a switch. I was thinking Lullabye by Billy Joel since I've seen him with my dad twice and since my dad got me into classic rock/80s hair band music.

  • Here is what I have planned so far
    Prelude:Blue October, 18th Floor Balcony:
Seating of Mothers: Yiruma, Bella's Lullaby
Processional- Bridal Party: Verve Bittersweet Symphony
    Recessional:Lifehouse, All In
Our DJ is also doing our ceremony.I haven't decided on 1st or last dance songs yet or what I will be walking down to. I'm leaning toward Bless This Broken Road by Raskal  Flatts.

  • We don't dance so no songs for that.

When during the walk I want the same song played for all WP members including me. I love "Will you marry me" by Mindy Ellis  and "A thousand years" by Christina Perry. I haven't decided which one yet.

You should do both Sugar! Usually the bride comes out to something different than everyone else to "announce" her entrance.

  • SO I can't believe I forgot, I will probably do My LIttle Girl by Tim McGraw for the father/daughter dance.

I don't have it all worked out but I want to incorporate the new jason mraz song "I won't give up" though I'm not sure if that's the title, in the processional somewhere.  If we do a first dance (still trying to convince FI) I would like either Pledging my love by david allen coe or telephone romeo by jason boland since that has meaning for us for when we first started dating.  Other than that I'm still thinking of ideas for processional since I want something different than the typical music so to be continued...
oh and for the recessional possibly kiss the girl from the little mermaid since that was my favorite but I love the muppets theme that someone posted very cute!
  • I am such a slacker compared to the rest of you. The only thing FI and I have been talking about is first dance song, which might possible be god gave me you by blake shelton.

  • I want to walk down the aisle to "Marry Me" by Train.
Our first dance will be to "Bless the Broken Road" by Rascal Flatts.
The father/daughter dance will be to "I Loved Her First" by Heartland (my mom has said she wants me to use that song since it first came out, and I think it's perfect).

I haven't decided on anything else yet. We both are big into music so I'm sure we'll have quite the list for our poor DJ.

Emilyb - we have really similar tastes in music!   I have all of your songs on my iPod :P

Not all of these are 100%, but here's what we have so far (going through music has been one of our favourite things since we got engaged, so we've spent a lot of time on it!):

    - FI will escort FMIL down the aisle to an old recording of his Dad singing.  We have a few good songs to choose from, so we haven't picked yet.  They will light a memorial candle for him while the song is playing as well.

    - My momma will be escorted by my cousin, followed by my bridesmaids to Hagood Hardy's - Anne's Theme.  It's the theme song from Anne of Green Gables and is soo beautiful.  It was a very important significance in my life.  (FYI - most people probably haven't heard of Anne of Green Gables, so here's the song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AO8gx5Et5QQ )

    - My daddy and I will walk down to Ingrid Michaelson - Can't Help Falling in Love (cover of Elvis)

    - For the recessional, we're not sure.. but maybe I Take Your Hand by The Wedding Band (Mumford & Sons)

    - Bridal party entrance into the reception: Survivor - Eye of the Tiger (for my MOH, it's one of her favourite songs) is our top pick right now, but we are not 100% sure on that.

    - Mine & FI's reception entrance song: LMFAO - Sexy & I Know It.  I unabashedly LOVE LMFAO and everyone knows it haha   Plus FI and I always dance around the house like nerds to the song

    - Father-daughter dance:  Here's where I've been having the most trouble.  I am HUGE daddy's girl. We're very close, but we're more silly than mushy gushy.   I want to find a song that tells him how important he is to me, but isn't too sugar-y sweet like Butterfly Kisses, etc.   We don't like country, which cuts down a lot of father-daughter dance options haha

    - First dance:  Right now our top 2 picks are Van Morrison - Someone Like You or Otis Redding - That's How Strong My Love Is

    - Last song of the night: Ray Lamontagne - You Are the Best Thing
