Question about the wedding dress!

Recently my boyfriend proposed and we decided we want to get married on July 20th, of this year. We're both in the military and we've been stationed more than 2,000 miles apart for almost a year now, so that would explain why we want to marry so quickly.
Anyway. I'm looking for a wedding dress, and my budget is going to be about 1,500 - 2,000. My wedding is in four months, so I don't really have much time for ordering and alterations. How long does it usually take for a dress to be prepped and shipped? I don't want to have to settle just because my wedding is so soon, and I refuse to move the date just because of the dress.

Any advice would be absolutely amazing! Thank you so much, ladies :)

Re: Question about the wedding dress!

  • TOOOTALLY depends on where you go and what your gown style is. My gown from DB had a leeway of about 3 months to get to me, but it arrived within three WEEKS. I refused to get alterations done there, so I went to a local person to look less than a week.

Then I scrapped that gown.. And bought anew one. lol. But I bought it off the rack so I walked away with it. I had a sweetheart neckline put in and it was done in two days. It was PERFECT in every single way, and it  was ready to be in my hands in two days? Score.

Other places take MUCH longer. You have a larger budget than I was willing to spend on a gown, so you could end up with a nicer salon that could take even up to 9 months.
Just be HONEST with your consultants wherever you go. They will be honest about the timeline of things. It can vary from day OF to 9 months.
  • Like PP said, it all depends.

I only looked at two places, but both had slightly diffrent answers concerning dresses I was intrested in.
The first place I went to (in Jan) insisted that If I want the dress to come back no later than a week/a week and a half to have it in time for the wedding (in September). I was a bit suprised at that.
The second place (And the one I went with) Told me when their next shipment of allure (my designer)'s gowns would be in. End of June/Begining of July. She said alerations were all planned according to who's wedding was first, and that there would be more than enough time.

For an Extra fee, some places can do a rush order.

It also depens on the type of dress, and what needs to be done to it after. As someone who used to make stage costumes, a lot more work goes into a garment than simply "taking it in". The first dress (A maggie soterro) was heavily boned (and apparently awkwardly so), had a heavier fabric and was a lace applique with beads. It would be much more difficult to alter. It would have required many fittings and a lot of tinkering with.
My dress is just lace applique, no boning, no beads. It will only take a few hours to fix.
  • Stores like Nordstrom and JCrew have bridal dresses now, check them out and see if you can get to a location with dresses you can take with you. I bought mine off the rack from DB. If alterations are potentially a problem, you could have those done at a different place with less of a lineup. Good luck!!
  • google bridal consignment  most poeple think consigment is all used but not so. in ct we have a place that has never worn off the rack bridal gown samples for sale they get the gowns from salons and designers who discontiuned the dresses. they also get used dresses but they have tags on all the dresses and it will say new or uses. some of the dresses will have flaws like missing buttons minor things that the place can alter and you can buy the dress off the rack the place i have gone 2 carries sizes 0-30 and they even have designer gowns like the ones in klinefield in nyc hope this helps you
