Speaking of spanx... what do you recommend?

Hi ladies,

I'm thinking of buying some spanx to go under my dress to try and tame my tummy.  My big problem area is my waist, and I'd like something that actually gives me a figure, because currently I don't really have one.

I've tried shapewear from target before, and I wasn't impressed.  I felt like it was really thick, and didn't do very much.  It smoothed me a little, but added bulk.

It needs to be underbust, and I'm thinking brief, not shorts, since I don't really need to control my thighs.  I was thinking about something like this:

But there are some other choices that are similar... I just can't tell what the difference really is.

Did you buy anything like this and were happy with it?  Does spanx really work better, or am I paying more for nothing?

Re: Speaking of spanx... what do you recommend?

  • I love my pair of spanx.  I have worn them so much I really should get another pair.

If I were you I would buy the one's with shorts because they tend to be more comfortable then the briefs.  Also, with all shape wear, the pushed in and smoothed out skin/fat has to go somewhere so weird lumps and bumps could occur around the bottom of the briefs.

I haven't tried any other brands for shapewear since I have had so much success with my pair of spanx.  And as for working, my little pooch definitely gets smoothed out and flattened when I wear them.

  • I second the previous post about the shorts. I've tried the briefs and they are just really really uncomfortable. Plus, with the squeezing and smoothing effect through your midsection, with the briefs I always feel that the overhang ends up being pushed down towards my butt and thighs.

I bought the original Spanx brand and was happy with them. Make sure to pay attention to the size chart because it really does matter.

  • Hmm... good to know about the shorts.

    Maybe something more like this.

Kind of expensive, but hopefully I'll get a lot of use out of it!

  • Or they have this one

This one is cheaper, and more like hosiery.  I don't know if that's better or worse.  It's rated as "super" control, whereas the one before is "super-duper" control.

  • I used to work retail in a really small boutique that sold Spanx and we would sometimes let customers open a package and feel (not try on) how "controlling" they were. Could you find a store and be really nice to the employees and see if they'll let you do that? We also sold a faux-spanx brand and they were definitely not as good.

  • I didn't even think about looking in a store.  I've never seen them in a store, but just googling said that they are sold in dillards, bloomingdales, torrid, and Catherines.  Maybe I'll try there first before I order online.

I am also a little worried about getting too hot (getting married in June in Houston)... but it's an indoor wedding, so hopefully it won't be that bad.

I went to Von Maur and tried on spanx and they are thicker than other shapewear. The Target ones are called Assets and I believe they are from same company who makes spanx. I ended up buying TC Fine Intimates brand because they're thin and seriously the most Comfy shapewear I've ever tried on.  And they didn't fold over like the spanx did! They we're around $55 ish
  • The spanx brand does smooth better than the cheaper brands. Get the super duper ones without the bra strap attachment. I got those once and when I moved, it felt like it was tugging on my boobs. No bueno!
  • I bought my spanx at Nordstrom like 8+ years ago.  I am actually wearing them today.  I would get them in a nude color because you will get more use out of that color then you would black.

I think the first pair you posted would provide the best support/shape.

Also, Spanx has opened up retail stores.  Not sure where they are located but you could always look on their website for locations.

  • I bought one from Dillards today.  It was the last one I posted.

It definitely smoothed me out, but it doesn't give me any real shape.  I'm just not meant to have a real waist :(

I'm thinking about trying the other pair, the more expensive one to see if it can really reel me in on the sides, but I doubt it will be any different from the other.  I'll still keep the one I have because it's better to be smoothed out than nothing at all.
