Black Bridesmaids Dresses?

It's just about time to choose dresses for my bridal party -- MOH, three bridesmaids (one of whom is 8 years old). I am having a hard time wrapping my head around choosing something for someone else to purchase and then wear for me.

For this reason, I am leaning toward black bridesmaids dresses as they are at least a little more practical. The problem I'm having is that there really isn't any other black in my wedding - my colors will be white, silver and red. Believe it or not, I am having a hard time finding pictures online of black BM dresses where black wasn't ALSO a color in the wedding.

Am I overthinking this? Will this look okay? I would probably try to tie them together with red shoes and/or accessories or something if I go this route - Maybe even a red or silver sash. My other option for the dresses would be red if that matters, and my MOH is a red-head so I don't really want to do that to her :)

Thanks!

Re: Black Bridesmaids Dresses?

  • What about silver or pewter bridesmaids dresses??  They can have red flowers and black shoes?

Take a look at the second picture down on this website.
  • Black will be fine - I think it can be a good base color. Get a red or silver sash or belt for them and you'll be set :) They could even do black shoes and you can get some shoe clips (etsy) for them in your colors.
  • Thanks Rachel - i LOVE that photo of the silver bridesmaids dress in that link (esp. with the red flowers!) but I'm doing silver tablecloths and thought that would be too much.

@winelover123 - great idea about the shoe clips! Definitely something I hadn't thought of
  • my friend did black dresses (her color was red) so the black complimented the red, and the dresses were beautiful.  Not to mention I still get use of it 5 years later.  We wore black shoes at the wedding, but I have paired it will black, silver and red since then as well.

  • we chose black bridesmaid dresses from Bella Bridesmaidhttp://www.bellabridesmaid.com (they have locations all over the us) and we are tying it together with mixed color bouquets and small colored flowers in the hair. If the men are wearing Black suits or tuxes I think it will blend in very well. My 'Maids really liked the idea of black so they can wear again and I also let them pick their style as long as it was alfred sung. I loved the idea of picking a designer or line and letting them pick what they wanted within reason and they are in love with their dresses.

  • Black dresses are a great base. Accessorize and add flowers in your accent colors.

  • We're doing black bridesmaid dresses.  I have 3 BMs who like all over the world.  Black is easier for everyone.
We're bringing the colour in via flowers and (possibly) a sash.

I think you're find with black.  It's a good neutral.

  • I asked my BMs to go with black.  Each lady's dress is different too, but it still totally works.  A for working with your colour scheme, I didn't even bother choosing a colour scheme.  We just picked whatever we liked and somehow it all worked out.  You can see pics here if you need another example: LINK

By the way, I'm a couple of days late here but I just watned to thank everyone for the responses!

I think I'll lean toward black or even "white" (ivory or something) for the bridesmaids. I just want to try to keep things simple.

    Thanks!!

ETA: Vireyda, your wedding looks amazing and so fun. I can feel your personality through those pictures! The note from the photographer in the begining about you thinking that that you're being high maintenance -- that's me too! I don't want anything to be stressful and I really just want it to be fun :) Thanks so much for the inspiration!!
