Storing my dress

I'm not getting married until September 2014, but I was head over heels in love with a Vera Wang dress from DB and I went ahead and bought it because I wasworried they might not have it anymore when it got closer to my wedding. They told me the dress wouldn't be in until May or June, but it's here already. I bought a fabric bag from them to store it in and I have plenty of room so that's not a problem. Here's my problem: my closet has windows in it. If my dress is in the fabric bag and I have it hanging away from the windows, do you think it will still fade from the sun?

Re: Storing my dress

  • I would keep it far away from the windows and I would try to store it laying down if possible.  Since wedding dresses tend to be heavy, the longer they are hanging the more possible it could stretch out.

Heck if I had a few extra bucks I may even be willing to get the dress preserved since the wedding is 18 months away.

  • I would consider buying a long garment box and storing it laying down. Maybe under the bed? It is likely to stretch if it is hanging up that long. And I agree with maggie. Don't store it in the closet with windows unless you are going to cover the window somehow with room darekning curtain.
  • When I got married the first time, I bought my dress and then ended up postponing the date, so I had the dress a year and a half early. The bridal store recommended storing the dress wrapped in a white sheet to keep it from fading. We did that, and it worked great. It also had the added bonus of keeping the dress hidden.

  • Thanks guys! I never really thought about putting it in a box and laying it down. I don't want to store it under our bed, but I guess I could store it under the guest room bed. Do you think it will matter if it has to be folded up a little bit?

Nope, that won't matter at all.  Since you will most likely be getting it altered when your date gets closer, just make sure that it gets steamed/pressed as well.
