i back up several desks here. this week and next, i am working in one of the departments i back up. it's easy work.
i have a question. the person i am covering for is without a computer (hence the need for me to cover) so i asked someone else in the department. this is not an equal-level coworker, but it's not a superior. it's a person who knows the answer to EVERY question you could ever come up with for this department. he's a walking user guide.
i IM'd him a basic question. i asked if he could tell me which column in a spreadsheet i needed to fill out for a client's request because i hadn't had this kind of request in over 6 months. he ignored it.
i emailed him the question. he replied, CC'ing *my* manager, and the manager of the entire account AND the manager of the entire region that my question was basic, i should have learned the answer in my training, and to call the person i am covering for at home since she will have the answers.
that was his reply to me. i was furious. if someone is not at work, i do not think i should have to call them at home to ask them something. and if he took the time to actually reply to me, he could have easily answered me instead of making it seem like what i asked of him.
i forwarded the email to my manager, saying i didn't think the reply i received was appropriate since we all work on the same team, and that we often ask one another basic questions without informing our managers that our coworkers ought to just know better.
i ended up calling my cowoerker at home to get the information i needed, and i told my manager that moving forward i will send my questions to a manager for them to get the answers i need.
i did not appreciate being thrown under the bus like that for no good reason. the main issue i have is, in the time it took him to tell me that i should have learned the answer in my training (2 years ago), he could have easily told me which column to fill out.
