Wedding Woes

To go or not to go

The local high school is doing a production of Beauty and the Beast.  I'm trying to decide if the kids are old enough to get it.  If they were a touch older I'd have no questions, but hmmmmm.  Decisions decisions.

Re: To go or not to go

  • We took DD to a production of Beauty and the Beast last spring, when she was 3 1/2.  She liked it and was very good for it.  However, she is *very* familiar with the movie and songs, and she's been to a lot of movies, so she knows how to behave in a dark theater.
I think you'd be OK to take 6let, but M2 might be a struggle.
  • High school production means cheap tickets, I hope.  It will be a good trial run.  And if you have to leave 15 minutes into it, that's okay.

I took my niece to a show at the Fox in St. Louis ($$ tickets) when she was about 7.  It ended when she stood up mid show and declared that she hated it and that this was the worst birthday present ever.  I was very tempted to make her sit down and suffer the rest of the show while I devised a speech about being a rude little brat, but she was becoming a distraction to the people around us so we hit the road.

The show did kind of suck, too.  It was supposed to be a Disney "review" which I thought would be little vignettes from Disney movies/characters.  Instead it was just people standing on stage singing.  Minimal sets (like a ladder or a stool per scene), no costumes, no story.  It wasn't kid friendly at all.

  • Is this the niece with the funny voicemails?
  • Ha!  Yes.

She is 15 now and driving.  She can still be pretty rude sometimes, though.

Tickets are $10/adult and $8/kid.  I kind of just want to send DH with 2 kids and stay home and nap;)  Given the size of the school I'm betting it's good.

Zsa- That girl needed a talking to.
  • In all honesty, I think at that age unless it's a show geared towards kids that lets them move around and interact, it can be hard for them to sit still and pay attention that long until they're around 9-10ish.  I'm not totally familiar with the look of the stage show, so I'm not sure if it's visually stimulating enough to hold the attention.

Is there an afternoon matinee?  You aren't excepted to be quite so behaved for the afternoons, so that might be better for the experiment.

There is a noon Sunday.  They have never been to a movie, but they do ok at church.  I'm thinking we may just skip for now.
  • My vote would be no on M2, probably not for 6let.

I remember going to theater productions in elementary school with girl scouts - but the plays were geared towards children.

We took Wolverine to see a Pirate dinner theater in Jan  she was ~26mo) and she seemed to like it and behaved well throughout - but she also had the distraction of food, and the show had a lot of audience participaton, lights/costumes/music/pyrotechnics to keep kids interested. A high school production (no matter how good the theatre budget - and it's probably not huge) will probably not be that interesting to young kids.
