Paint suggestions?

I thought I might pick up the nursery paint this weekened because Menard's has an 11% rebate thing going on.

Has anyone used Dutch Boy Refresh?  It's low odor, low VOC, paint/primer in one, and it's only $28/gallon.  Supposedly, the baking soda sucks the nasty smells out of the room but that seems silly and probably doesn't work and is not the biggest selling point for me.  We're only doing three walls (in a 10x12 room) with one light blue/green color on top of beige, so one coat *should* do it with some touch up in spots.

I really love the Pittsburg Grand Distinction but it's too smelly for me to handle right now.

I'm not totally weird about the low/no VOC thing, it's mostly an odor issue for me.  Sure, I could have someone else paint it, but I'm an ass and won't let anyone.  BECAUSE EVERYTHING MUST BE PERFECT!!!!!1!!!!1!1!

I've never tried it, but I did like the paint and primer from Lowes.

i painted while i was pregnant and it smelled like nothing.  it was almost eerie.

  • Thanks for the offer, Hmo.  It's lacking the green i need: http://i-cdn.apartmenttherapy.com/uimages/at/aloe%20112112.jpg

It perfectly matches this fabric I found for the cornice board.  It's so pretty.

  • you could take it to a benjamin moore store and re-tint it.  whatever -- it's yours if you want it.  i can just drive by and fling the can on your lawn.

  • I thought they couldn't retint to something lighter, unless I'm wrong.

Feel free to fling it on my neighbor's lawn.  She's a psycho.

  • Can I just say that I really enjoyed your Menard's reference?  We don't have them here, and whenever my dad talks about going to Menard's, I get a little pang.  Not like a Portillo's pang, just a little one.

Anyway, we use the stuff at Lowe's and have always been happy, FWIW.  This is Lowe's country.
  • there is no pang like a portillo's pang.

  • They are building a Portillo's in AZ and DH wants to drive the 50 miles to the other side of the valley for the opening. I just feel like this can't be good. Anyways, Ali- in my research about paint low VOC paints are actually better quality because they have more pigment and provide better coverage. I have been painting with a low VOC/zero odor brand and I can usually do 2 thin coats with excellent coverage and durability. I think there is an odor but it clears within 12 hours.

  • The last time I was in Portillo's, I forgot I saw a sign about them opening one in Arizona.

I got a chopped salad from Corner Bakery today and it just wasn't as good as Portillo's :(  They really need to open one a little closer to my house.  I don't like their Italian beef and their hot dogs are just Chicago-style hotdogs that you can get anywhere around here.  But their salads?  Amazeballs.

I think I will go SAVE BIG MONEY at Menard's this weekend and give this paint a shot.  I love that you can buy food, clothes, cat litter, whatever there.
