So Dr. WW question about kids and ear-infections

I see the doc w/ the kiddo at 9:15 tomorrow...

Kiddo says her ears hurt/ache (although, she's 2.  She also is terrified of lambs and told me about how I took away her lovie today and that she has a boo-boo on her toe because the dog licked it)...and she's been pulling at them.  She now has bleeding scabs inside each of them, from digginga t them w/ her nails (which I did cut, but apparently they're still sharp)

what say ye?  ear infection?  something else?

(my child has been freakishly healthy, so we haven't had an ear infection until now...)

Re: So Dr. WW question about kids and ear-infections

  • I'd say ear infection.

Luckily DefConn's never dug in his ears until they bled, but my friend's daughter does when hers are infected.   DefConn just screams bloody murder in the night when he has one.  And he gets pukey.
  • Allergies?  The scratching makes me think allergies.  I've had both (allergies and ear infections) and the ear infection isn't itchy, but extremely painful.  Like, migraine painful.  Could be allergies leading to extra drainage leading to ear infections?

We have a freakishly healthy kid too and she had her first ear infection about 6 months ago. Kids are weird - - she barely complained.   They must be better at ignoring pain or something. We only took her to the doctor because she had a concurrent illness and the doc looked in her ears.

allergies are possible, botht he Mr. and I have them acting up right now.

She had a touch of runny nose at the farm yesterday--but we all did because cold, dust, sheepy smell, etc.
No other runnynose or eyes.  yet.

Sounds like an ear infection to me. I'm amazed you've managed to avoid them this long.

I agree.  DefConn has had them on and off since 6 mos old and has had 4 so far this year (yes, I know...it's only April).  I'm hoping he's done for awhile because I really want to avoid going the ENT/tubes route if we can.

I had constant ear-infections as a kid...so I don't know where she got her immune system.

I suppose someone has to be on the low end of the spectrum to balance out the stats they give about how many ear infections kids get :-P
  • Neither of my girls has had an ear infection.

I say cockroaches and you'll be on a future episode of Untold Stories of the ER.

    Really, it's probably an infection.

Bacon's never had one. No pinkeye, either. I couldn't believe it, because I was the kid who got both every single winter. And coldsores, which she has also escaped. <div>
</div><div>Heck, if she hadn't gotten strep throat that once, we wouldn't know she's allergic to cillins. </div>

  • Is she running a fever?  That might help differentiate between allergies and infection.

She doesn't seem to have a fever...I suppose I shouldfind the damn thermometer and check.  But she hasn't felt warm.
