50 Shades

I have not read the books, but I also don't live under a rock, so I know about them.

Did you hear they got Alex Pettyfer to play Christian? Does this seem odd to anybody else? I thought the guy was older than that. I never intended the movie, but this is an odd choice after all the hubub.

Re: 50 Shades

  • I'm in the same boat you are (never read it but know enough - also never intend to see the film) and I thought he was older also.   But HELLO Alex Pettyfer.  He was one of the best things to look at in Magic Mike, IMO.   Rawr.

Christian Grey is 28, IIRC. Amazingly enough, the fact that he is a 28yo multibillionaire is one of the more believable points in the books.

ETA: I see the article says he is 27. He does have a birthday at some point in the trilogy, so maybe he turned 28. And yes, I'm a little sad that i know this.

  • let's read this the correct, accurate way: gus van sant sent an unsolicted reel to the film studio as a way to audition for the director's job.  he got alex pettyfer to play along with test.

gus van sant is not the official director, and alex pettyfer has not been cast in any role.

And man, I can't help but wonder who would touch this. It'll definitely be big bucks, but at the expense of any artistic integrity anyone had, right? I mean, how do you go from Milk to 50 shades?

Alex Pettyfer isn't exactly established as a serious actor, but J-Law as Anastasia? Come on.

    That's what I thought too.
  • who wouldn't direct this?  they are going to make a frillion dollars.

the rumor is that the studio wants it to be more arty, and gus van sant is certainly an auteur.  as a director, he can certainly choose to focus more on the story (is there one?) rather than just scene after scene of ntercoursin' all the time.  (and dealing with a plumber because that is what happens when you flush lady products.)

paul verhoeven did "showgirls" but he also did "total recall" and "robocop."  paul thomas anderson did "boogie nights" but he also did "there will be blood" and "the master."
