Wedding Woes

marriage license

Hi ladies,
So this isn't really a "wedding woe" but I wasnt sure where to ask this question... I was researching marriage licenses in our county that we are getting married in and realized that fi and I would have to take the day off to go get it (out of town) I have the week before and the week after our wedding off from work it'd be difficult to get any additional day off. If we went on monday of the week before our wedding would that be cutting it too close? I read somewhere you should go a month before but I don't think I can get another day off.

Re: marriage license

  • Can you leave early one day?  It took us all of fifteen minutes to get ours.

Do you remember what you read that said a month before?  B/c I think we got ours the week before, it had to be turned in within a month for our county.  It seems really early to be grabbing the license.

call your county's city clerk office. usually, any official office will have a monday thru friday work week, so i think most people should expect to have to take time away from work if they don't get weekday days off regularly. this isn't a unique situation.

you need to call them to find out how far in advance you need to get your license and how long it is valid for. in my state, it is valid for 30 days and there is a 24 hour waiting period before you can actually be married unless you're married at city hall. this sounds like it should be asked on your local board.
  • Monday should be fine. We had to get ours w/in a month of the wedding and at least 72 hours before. My husband works out of state and was not home until the week of the wedding. We got ours on Wednesday for our Saturday wedding.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • That's true I could ask to leave early... my boss is a crazy b*tch from hell though, so who knows :P I had just googled marriage lisense and it said go a month before but the knot says two wks. I don't see why a week before would be a problem though.because the county website says it takes like half an hour to do.

Call the county office.  Do not rely on the website and DEFINITELY don't rely on the knot.

    Agreed.

But for funsies - We had to get ours within 3 days of the wedding (no earlier) and it took less than 15 minutes to get.  We had to have a witness present.

    <div>Yes.</div><div>
</div><div>Same exact situation for me. I live in IL, the fiance in PA. We're getting it the week of the wedding. The Knot just gives suggestions like that so you can spread things out and not leave a lot of things at the last minute. For my county, we only have to wait a day to use it. It's all about the waiting period, so unless you have a 2 week waiting period in your county or it takes 2 weeks until they give it to you, there's no reason you have to get it early.</div>
