Wedding Woes

And a ridiculous one...

To cleanse the palate.

Dear Prudence,
I told my husband that it is unnerving for me to have conversations with people if they are wearing sunglasses and I am not. It bothers me that I can't see their eyes but they can see mine. Their failure to remove their sunglasses so we can make eye contact strikes me as rude. My husband thinks it is my problem. I think etiquette dictates that they remove their sunglasses, provided they don't have a real medical reason for wearing them. Who's right?

  • I think she needs a hobby.

Though I do think it's rude to keep on sunglasses.

I wear sunglasses whenever I think I need them.
Which includes at work, indoors, whenever my eyes/head bug me.

Yeah, it's not ideal but my migraine trumps etiquette any damn day of the week.  And really, most people only wear sunglasses if there's a reason (either medical or, ya know, SUN) and remove them when they can; deal w/ making pretend eye-contact people.

how often does this even happen?

sometimes it's easier to leave on prescription sunglasses rather than switch to your regular ones if you are going to stay in the sun most of the time. i'll lift them up when i greet someone if i am in a store and i won't be very long, but i'd rather just leave them on.

but really, i also think it's rude to just leave them on for al long period of time when you are talking to someone. that said, i can't imagine this happening to someone so often, with so many people, that it's become an issue.

  • Does she live in LA?

  • Huh.  I never thought about this being rude.

When you're out in the sun at the ballpark, encountering others in your seats, on the way to the bathroom or to the concession stand, no one makes a point to lift their sunglasses while chatting.  What would be the point of wearing sunglasses?

I think she should break out into song. I wear my sunglasses at night. So I can So I can...
  • Man, must be that their futures are SOOOOO bright...*heh*

Seriously...this person needs to get the flock over herself.  Or does she get offended if people with vision problems don't make eye contact either?
