Town Hall Meeting with Hilary

We did not get to meet with her personally unfortunately. But it was still fun to be there!

Here's a picture that my friend Alex took! He's an awesome photog. His photostream is on Flicker! You can also see CMU-Q's beautiful building :-)

I think that is really awesome that you got to see her speak.  Although I'm a Republican, I still respect and very much agree with a lot of what she says/does.

What kind of things did she talk about?

Yay Hil!  The meeting sounds really cool.  What were the main topics that she covered?  Just checked out the Flickr stream, gorgeous pictures.  How new is your building there?

I got to meet her once when she spoke in Pittsburgh before the presidential election primaries :)

It was a little complicated, because it was a town hall meeting style talk, which was conducted mostly in Arabic by the moderator. While the moderator would translate his questions, he encouraged the students that asked questions to speak in Arabic - but they did not translate them.

(There were devices passed out before the talk, but since we initially did not have tickets and were late, we did not get one). Luckily, some of our friends students were sitting next to us and gave us the English translation.

We were also a little disappointed in the questions - they were heavily focused on Iran, and then the moderator finally stopped that. After Iran, people asked about women's rights around the world and some other topics. But nothing about France and the possible banning of the veil, etc.

Femme - The building is brand new! They just opened it Feb of 2009. Northwestern is currently in the building, while their new building is built. Educaiton City is pretty young, and has only been around about 10 years or so. And actually, there is construction all around Doha and Education City - this is such a developing city! It's exciting :-)

I think they have a story about this on CNN.  I didn't know if it was the same THM when I read the headline, but it sounds like it since I know it mentioned Iran...here's the first one I found when I searched just now, but I think there's another one that I saw earlier (it didn't have such a negative sounding title.  http://www.cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/02/15/clinton.iran/index.html?hpt=T2

Very cool that you got to attend JennyBee !

Very, very cool!  What are the translation devices like?  That sounds so sci-fi!

Is the France veil issue a hot topic in Doha?  I feel like I don't hear much about it here.

Also very neat about all the new construction there.

Jamie - yep, that is the article that everyone has been posting here too! Although its on Al-Jazeera English, since they moderated :-P

Femme - I definitely think we are hearing more about the veil ban over here since we are in a Muslim country. I just updated my blog with some links to articles about it. Should help you get caught up :-)

The translation devices are headphones, with a little box, kind of a like a microphone box would be. There were actually people in these little boxeswho were translating as Hilary spoke, since it was live! They seem to be standard here - both DH and my friend Kira went to conferences where the topic was not always discussed in English, so headsets were given out so they could understand the session. Crazy huh? :-)
