Stupid Shower Question

So, I've received a few gifts prior to the shower.

My mom is saying I have to announce the list and what they got at the shower, even though they aren't attending. This seems like a giant waste of time. I wrote thank yous to the people. I just can't understand saying "I ALSO GOT A BLENDER FROM JANE SMITH, WHO COULD NOT MAKE IT."

It seems weird, but I haven't been to any showers.

    Yeah that's crazy and awkward.

Tell your mom you don't feel comfortable doing this...and change the subject if she brings it up again.
  • I think that's odd.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I don't think you need to. It seems weird.
  • Makes it sound like she died. Weird.

  • Yeah, I wouldn't do this. I would be aware of what was given by whom if you've already received it as a shower gift, as to just be able to mention casually to your guests in conversation. As in, if Jane Smith couldn't attend, but her mother was there and the mother knows Jane sent a blender before hand, I can see it being polite to also say "Oh Mrs. Smith! I'm sorry Jane couldn't make it with you, but she sent a blender and I can't wait to use it! Thank her again for me." But I certainly wouldn't go so far as to make announcements of each and every person who sent something, especially since others will realize some did not send anything.

I'm probably overanalyzing. It's what I do. But don't do this.
  • The few people who sent gifts to us before the shower (because they couldn't attend) wanted me to wait and open them at the shower. It was only about three, so I did it, but I'm not sure why since they weren't there to see how much I loved the serving platter or gravy boat. I don't think I would have announced it if I'd opened it before, though. That seems weird... Maybe if someone asked, but I don't see a lot of poeple coming up to you and asking "Oh, I see your Aunt Edith isn't here. What did she get you?" I mean, huh?

What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

Alright. Thought so. Good to have back-up on the matter.
  • My mom wanted me to bring the gift we just received to the shower, open it there, and announce it to everyone as well. I told her everyone will know that we received it at our house, because obviously the giver won't be there. I just think its weird to move a gift from my parents house to the shower and then bring it back to my parents house for storage. The giver won't even be there to see my reaction! So I just opened it and am going to send a thank you card. If anyone asks about her I'll say what a lovely gift she got us.

  • Yeah, I don't think it's necessary to announce that at the shower.
  • I don't think it's necessary to make that kind of announcement at a shower.
