Alterations - taller shoes or hem the dress?

I went to my first dress fitting this past weekend because I bought my dress in Brooklyn (I live in DC) and was up in NYC for FI's cousin's wedding.

I was a little disappointed because they had ordered the dress I bought 2 sizes too big so they could cut out the corset back and put in buttons. I guess it's just ever so snug, so I'm a bit worried. I had been trying to gain weight, but I guess I'll clearly stop that now! Neither here nor there.

The main thing is that I'm 5'7/5'8 and I had purchased 2.5in shoes for comfort reasons, but after finding out how much money it costs to hem the dress, I feel like I should just ball out with heels. My FI is only 6'0/6'1, though, so I feel a bit limited - he'll be upset if I'm taller than he is. The alterations woman was a bit rushed so I didn't get an exact heel amount, but given the shoes I bought, I'm thinking the shoes need to be at least 4.5 inches.

Is this a sucky plan or should I shell out the $$$$ for hemming alterations?

If it is not a sucky plan, can anyone make any suggestions for shoes that have tall heels but perhaps platforms that bring things to a more reasonable (and comfortable) place?

Thanks!

  • I would wear the highest heel I could and save the money...you'll thank yourself later.

[QUOTE]I'd just pay to hem the dress. I had four inch heels with a platform and I needed to change into platform flip flops when we were done with first dances. You will have a long day of being on your feet, taking pictures, dancing, and mingling. You don't want to be uncomfortable because your feet hurt.

    It's $350 to get it hemmed :-\

  • Most hems are in the 100 to 150 range unless they have to hem it from the top of the skirt like when the bottom has scalloped edges. If that isn't the case with your dress, id look for another seamstress.

My dress is lace with significant detailing on the hem, very long train, etc. It's also NYC so prices just sky rocket based on that alone, I'm sure. I really just don't know nearly enough about sewing or the area I live in to feel comfortable finding someone down here in DC at this point.

  • Do you have any friends who recently got married in DC who you can ask? You can read online reviews on local seamstresses like you would for anything else. I'm sure DC prices will be less than NY and that way, the dress will be local. Besides, staying with your 2.5" heels is a plus for comfort and for keeping your fiance taller in pictures :)
