Need a Second Opinion: City Hall Wedding Dress

Hi there!

I'm getting married in 20 days! I've been posting loads about my wedding dress issues (bought a long dress, but I'm having a small, rushed wedding and FH's mum and a few others think I should be wearing a short dress). So, after having brought it to a tailor (who is initially just going to take in the bust), I'm having doubts about cutting it.  It's not going to be as pretty short, and I'm going to feel silly wearing it long. I might just have to wear it another time. This is the dress, for reference:

I'm overseas, and I don't have any bridesmaids or close friends to give me an honest opinion. So, any feedback would be hugely appreciated!

  • I honestly love your first dress much much more.  The short dress is cute, but it sorta reminds of a nightclub dress, more than something I would want to get married in. I'm not even sure why, really.  Other than maybe the length.

Don't feel silly wearing your first dress long.    This is your wedding, courthouse or not.  So, tell your FMIL to back off.

IMHO, I think the second dress is wayyyy too sexy. The first dress is beautiful, mature, and appropriate! Please keep it long!

  • I love the first dress. Also, you say you might just wear it another time, but it's a wedding dress so I'm not sure where else you would wear it. I don't think the first one is inappropriate for a courthouse wedding at all.

  • Why would you feel silly wearing it long? It's really lovely and completely appropriate.
  • Thanks, everyone! I've been learning towards the first one.

It's a long story.  My FH and I have been talking about getting married for a while and he hinted at proposing for months, but we were going to wait at least a year. And then the UK Border Agency complicated our situation. (If we're not actually married by July, I have to gtfo). So, we've rushed to put together this small ceremony, and I want to make him feel comfortable by not having a long dress and not making a big to-do.

So, I originally wanted a short dress to go with the casual vibe, but I found this one. It was everything I wanted except it was long, so I bought it planning on cutting it. But, when I got it home, I saw how beautiful it was long and all my friends loved it (none of whom will be present). Now, I'm' hugely conflicted. If I cut it, it'll be a different dress - and nowhere near as beautiful. If I don't, I feel like I'll get side-eyed by his side of family.

I feel like everyone in his family thinks that this is 'just a court wedding'/a formality/ndb. They're actually wonderful people and they've helped us out loads, but I feel like I would look silly to them in a long white dress, making a big to-do, if they think it's primarily a marriage of convenience. I mean, it turned into one because of the rush, but we had been planning to marry in the next two years anyways.

Sigh, sorry about the rant. People on TK are probably sick of reading my posts about this, haha. Thanks for your opinions, though. I think I'm just gonna tell his mum that my mum and I both like the dress long - and just keep it that way.
  • You're right. This is a big deal for both of us. He's the guy of my dreams and we've wanted this for ages. Thanks; I think I really needed to hear that. :)
  • I wouldn't worry about being side-eyed.  If they do raise an eyebrow, it will be over quickly. A dress itself doesn't make the wedding a big to-do.
  • Totally a big deal and one of the best moments of your life. Wear your long dress and don't give a shizz what anyone else thinks! This is YOUR WEDDING. :)

  • I like both dresses. The second one looks great on you!
  • Dress #1 all the way.

Who cares if you're going to be married at city hall? Go for it! I would be cheering you on if I saw you out and about wearing that gorgeous dress. Then I'd pester you to hit up some bars for free shots in the dress but that's just me :)
