I don't get this

I've seen it on pinterest and now a bunch of people are sharing it on FB.  Why do I want a photo floating in a jar of vegetable oil?  This sounds like a dusting accident from hell just waiting to happen.  I don't think people in the olden days did this either.  They put useful things like tomatoes and peaches in those jars.

See, I was going to try something like this for our centerpieces, but they were going to be home made hurricane lanterns/candles (without photos). I thought it was a cool idea, but then our vendor offered free centerpieces, so we're going with those.
