Wedding Woes

So I need to fatten DS up

He's 41 in tall and 30.6 pounds. He's actually lost weight since the last time he was in the pediatrician's office a few months ago. So they want to bring him in for a weight check in 2 months and in the interim we need to encourage him to eat more- albeit healthy food. So any recipes or suggestions are welcome.

Re: So I need to fatten DS up

  • DH's mom finally resorted to feeding him protein shakes as a kid b/c he was so skinny.
  • Does he like/can he eat nut butters? That's good healthy fat.

Baby A really loves guacamole and will eat a huge dish of it with just 3 or 4 chips.

Maybe some greek yogurt for some fat and protein.

I remember when I was a babysitter in college and the little boy had a similar issue. After I would give him and his sister a bath, he would get his PJs on and go downstairs to have a class of milk and 3 little muffins. I'm not sure what kind of muffins they were, but I'm sure you could find a somewhat healthy recipe without an excessive amount of sugar.

I'm going to try avocado. He likes peanut butter but he's not into it right now (although I'm thinking I need to reintroduce dipping apples in it). He eats a ton of yogurt. I do need to look into muffins. I'm wondering if I could sub in Greek yogurt into a recipe for a protein boost.
  • I also like to give A protein shakes. Good way to sneak in veggies too.

There's a good muffin recipe in Jessica Seinfeld's Deceptively Delicious book.

They're super yummy, and I've made them for A's Kindermusik class. There are a bunch of other good recipes, too.

Shakes and avocado.  I really like this muffin recipe.  I used regular sugar though.  Be warned it makes a ton.  I do mix of mini and regular sized ones.

i add carnation instant breakfast to his milk most days. he also eats a LOT of mac and cheese, so i mix winter squash puree into it (it's orange), which makes it extra creamy, and i add extra milk. at least i don't feel like he's missing a vegetable this way.

this kid likes vegetables, but he'll eat a whole plate of broccoli or green beans and totally ignore the protein and other sides. i don't think he has a weight issue, but he is pretty skinny and is very active, so i know he burns off more than he takes in a lot of days. i resort to hiding vegetables in the fattening foods to make sure he eats the fattening stuff.

i used to hate the hidden vegetable recipes, but it's not just good for kids who hate vegetables. it's good for the kids who refuse to eat anything besides veg, too.
  • will he go for beans? hummus? guacamole?

Wolverine isn't a picky eater (most of the time) so she'll get whatever i make.

anything that she can dip is usually a win

    (not updated much anymore though)

I sneak butter into things and full-fat-dairy products are easy sells--and easy ingredients to do in her portion of a lot of things.
  • Butter.  Carbs.  Starches.  CAKE!

Here's an old favorite recipe of FIs:

Buy a pork loin.  Cover that puppy in onion, garlic, and seasonall spices.  Pour a little chicken broth in the pan, and bake it at 350 for an hour or til cooked safely through.

Boil a bag of egg noodles.  Then pop them in a frying pan, with literally a cube of butter, and cover that with some more onion, garlic, and pepper spices.  Let the edges get all kinds of crispy.

Slice up the pork loin, take the juices and make a gravy, and pour it all over everything on your plate.  1000 calories a serving, and oh so dang good.

    **Then have cake**

chocolate pudding (gravy) and biscuits. That's how my grandmother fattened me up ;-)
  • Avocado is one of our weight gain go-tos. You can also add some olive oil to everything he eats. These were things the nutritionist was having me do prior to DD's g-tube placement.
