A Nation of Wimps?

Little old, but I don't think I've seen it on here.  Interesting read.

That is interesting and I don't disagree.  There is this thing going around to the "Mom on the cell phone" instead of engaging with her kids.  The thing pisses me off for a million reasons, but then you turn around read this and it's telling you that you're wrong to play with your kid.

I know that this is coming from an educated person and using real information, but I'm honestly getting a fatigue from feeling like every little thing I do is judged or wrong.  At the same time I know I'm guilty of doing it.  I'm working hard to try to stop though.

This is coming on the heels of a friend "liking" a picture from a DINK website that says something about how a SAHM shouldn't get paid anything because she volunteered for that job when she spread her legs.  I can't express how irate that makes me too.

Just to be clear, It makes me irate because it assumes SAHM's think they should be paid. It completely negates the father's presence in the situation.  It also assumes the dad isn't home.  People everywhere spread there legs without becoming a SAH.  The volunteer word also rubs me wrong.

  • You know, I get irritated at parents sometimes for various reasons.  But I would never think something like that.

I get that V.  I can even understand why someone would think "this is what you signed up for."  There was something about the phrasing of it that really honked me off.  I know she's never wanted kids.  I've also known since college that she hates SAHparents, but this statement really struck a nerve.
  • I've read at least part of that article before.  But it's so true.

There's nothing wrong with failing and there's a lot wrong with fearing failure to the point that it makes you a basket case.

I get the feeling that you want to wrap your kid up in bubble wrap to avoid them being hurt or 'broken'.  I can say that I've had anxiety riddled dreams of terrible stuff happening to both my boys.

I think that parents have allowed that fear to take over and that has created this atomosphere of not allowing them to fall on the playground, lose a game, or fail a test, etc. because it is what they CAN control.  Plus with the advent of the internet and how much information is out there about all the horrible and horrific things in the world, it feeds that fear and the desire to keep your kid 'safe' at all times.  People have lost their ability to be reasonable about certain things and have let the fear take over and now we have ::waves hand:: all of this.

Hopefully, things will revert back closer to center and reason will take hold again.  But I'm not holding my breath.  Just trying to be one of those reasonable parents that are out there and ensure that my kids do take their lumps along with their triumphs.

And your friend is an asshole, 6.  Andplusalso, some of those DINK websites are particularly vile.

there's something I can't put my finger on that's very "kids these days *shakes cane*" about the article.
I don't disagree w/ all of it, far from it.  But something about the entire thing is squinchy faced for me
