Wedding Woes

Can I vent about this?

My sibs and I wrote my grandma's obituary last night. Google docs is awesome btw. Not super long, no picture of her, I think we have 5 small paragraphs. Sent it to my mom who called and got it into the paper for printing tomorrow.

Cost for one day in the paper, 30 days online and an in memory thing in one year? $1200. Is it just me or is that highway robbery? And I thought the wedding industry gouged.

    What the heck?  That's crazy!
  • Wow.  That's insane.  Really, like it costs anything but pennies for an online obit in the first place.  I know my mom does a yearly memoriam for my uncle, I wonder what it costs her.

    Wedding Countdown Ticker
  • Speaking as a newspaper reporter, and former obituary writer, that seems astronomical. Most papers give you a certain inch count for free -- like the first five inches are free, and it's $X per inch after that. (A general rule of thumb is 30 words = 1 column inch). For $1,200, you'd have to have written hundreds of inches of copy -- think thousands of words. The "In Memory" thing should run you the cost of a regular B&W two-by advert, which is (at most papers) less than $50. And online? WTH -- you upload obits, time-delay them to post at a certain time, and you're done. Keeping it online is easier than keeping it offline, actually. That's BS.
