Ireland wedding

Who is doing/ has done one? If so, do you have a simple list of the requirements/ paperwork needed?
I'm reading up on it, and will continue to read on it before calling Cork's Registrar, but it'd be so much easier if someone else already has a start :)

Also, I want to hear all your details.

Re: Ireland wedding

  • We tried. My whole family is in love with Dromoland Castle. Unfortunately Ireland is one of the tougher places to get married. You need to be in Ireland a month before your wedding to establish residency, although you can leave after that until a week before.

    Check out: http://www.destinationweddings.com/Destinations/Europe/Ireland.aspx

They have a tab for marriage requirements. If it works for you and your schedule, I think it's one of the most beautiful places in the world to get married. If it doesn't work, you can also consider doing a symbolic ceremony, and get legally married in your home state first. It depends on what is most important to you.
  • Hello, and welcome to the board! I'm planning a destination wedding in Ireland :) I haven't been great at keeping up with posts, as my schedule's a little crazy right now, but I'll try to keep you updated!

Actually, icecreamcono, the one month residency is no longer applicable. If you get in touch with the registry office you should be able to do everything by mail:

"In very limited circumstances (i.e. critical illness of one of the parties or one or both parties being resident outside the State) and only by prior agreement with the Registrar, it is possible for a couple to post a marriage notification to the Registrar. However, in such cases the couple must still attend the Registrar’s office in person at least 5 days before the marriage to complete their declarations of no impediment and produce the necessary documentation and particulars as set out above, and be issued with their MRF."

So it's really not that difficult or scary!

I haven't gotten the paperwork underway yet, but our wedding isn't until August 2014, so we've got some time. Two weeks ago I was able to go visit Dublin to meet with some potential vendors, and this week we hope to make deposits for our venue and photographer! That's where we stand, what are your plans thus far? So glad to have a fellow long-distance planner on board!

  • Thanks girls, we definitely want a legal ceremony on the day of, in Ireland.

Yes, I've been reading up and am so glad they changed that rule. We just got engaged on the 5th, so I've done very little so far.
I plan to call the registrar Monday to get paperwork started. We'd like to do Cork, we think. Right now I'm trying to look at some exact locations/ venues, make sure the important close family will actually be able to attend, and thinking of wedding colors.

So glad to have someone else who plans to get married there :)
  • That sounds great! Any idea of when you'll have it, or how many people will be in attendance?

  • June 5th, 2014. We should have about 30 people able to make the trip.
  • Wow! I really wish I had figured that out before throwing out the idea altogether! Glad to know it all changed. Thanks!

Cork is amazing, and full of great food. Have a great time planning it!
