bridal gown designers from the 50s-90s

so i thought it would be fun to list bridal designers from the 50s to the 90s some of them are still doing gowns at this present day.. would be fun to see what designers are still around doing gowns..

christos is one of them

not sure who did my grandmothers dress but it was from the 50s and only cost 150 dollars
and my moms dress from the mid 70s only cost 300 dollars and she said back then 300 was like a really high price for gowns and they would keep those locked up downstairs in the special room

Re: bridal gown designers from the 50s-90s

  • i am going to dig out my moms wedding dress to see who designed it i am curious it was high waisted long sleeves high neck some lace., her bridesmade gowns were the same high waist long sleeves high necklines and they wore hats with their dresses. the rainbow effect was popular in the late 70s-80s each girl would wear the same dress but in a different color

  • My FMIL bought her gown at JC Penney in the early 80s. Idk where my mom hot her dress but it was a high neck high waist long sleeved lace dress. Very 70s in style but no way could I squeeze into it, as it was a size 0!

  • My mother-in-law (married 1959) wore a dress that was shared with siblings.  I think at least 4 women wore the same dress.  It was a beautiful, timeless satin ballgown silhouette with long sleeves that had a point on top of the hand.

I wore a gown by Alfred Angelo (in 1982) that was $350!  I choked and gasped at the price, but I was able to make payments to the bridal shop.  It was an A-line with alencon lace overlay, and lace long sleeves.  It had a sweetheart neckline, but not like you see today.  Sweetheart was a less severe neckline than a queen-anne neckline (which is kind of horseshoe shaped).

We would get JC Penney and Sears catalogs in the mail and drool over the bridal section.  My sister-in-law fell in love with a dress in the JC Penney catalog and as soon as she got engaged she ordered it without trying it on.  Hers had a very high collar - it swept up and curled right under her chin - with puffy sleeves at the shoulder and long lace sleeves.  Her wedding was in the middle of July 1984 and she about died of heat stroke.

Long stories - but it was fun reminiscing!!
