Interviewing officiants

What questions do you ask them?  How did you know yours was right for you?

Re: Interviewing officiants

  • I would find out how flexible they are. A lot of officiants these days let you customize your ceremony by picking out your vows, readings, etc. Typically when you first meet officiants they bring samples of ceremonies they've performed so you can see the kinds of things they say and get a sense of their style. (If you are getting married in a more civil ceremony, that is--I don't really know how much flexibility there is if you are getting married in a house of worship or having a more religious ceremony.)

Also, make sure you click with the person and like the person :) My FH and I met one officiant who was kind and friendly, and very experienced, but he was a little bit too religious and traditional for our taste, and not really willing to customize our ceremony. We found another officiant whose personality we love and whose spiritual views align with ours (we want some religious aspects to our ceremony, but we don't want it to be overly traditional.) We also wanted to be able to customize our vows and readings to make it more personal, which he is more than willing to do.

The bottom line is, make sure you genuinely like the person and agree with their values and spiritual views! There are many officiants out there, so if you meet one you aren't sure about, don't be afraid to keep looking!
