Do any of you have a platinum e-ring and a white gold band?

I would really like to buy an affordable but lovely wedding band, and am wondering if I can do a white gold band, semi-eternity. Would love your thoughts. Having one of those weeks where one thing after another is going wrong, and our jeweler just gave us her quote for the wedding bands and both were 3-4 times what we were expecting. Thanks ladies!!

  • I don't have one each of engagement and wedding bands, but I wear two engagement rings (the one was my great gmas and I wear it as a right hand ring). They're on different hands, but I wouldn't say they clash or anything. My hands eat away at the gold like crazy though. I'm gonna have this thing redipped a million times.
I guess, to tell you the truth, I've never had much of a desire to grow facial hair. I think I've managed to play quarterback just fine without a mustache. - Peyton
  • I have a white gold e-ring and my wedding band is tungsten (which is close to platinum in color) My e-ring has yellowed over the years but they still don't look bad next to each other.  I wanted a very sturdy, scratch resistant simple band because of my work.   I only where my e-ring out on special occassions.

  • You could do this but keep in mind that white gold isn't what you see. White gold is plated in rhodium. Normal white gold is dull and not that shiny as it's an alloy of yellow gold and a silver toned metal like nickel or palladium.

Over time, the platinum will wear and develop a patina but the rhodium plating on white gold will need to be redone.

Instead, if you want similar wear on both rings, consider palladium. It's in the platinum family and is a fraction of the cost.

  • My engagement ring is platinum, and because of the size and design I decided on a very simple, plain even, white gold wedding band. I put them side by side and I couldn't really tell a difference. I'm sure as they both age more they may change, but it is likely I will limit how often I wear the engagement ring after the wedding.

I looked at the same ring I chose in platinum, and it was 4X as much. To me, that wasn't worth it.
  • I need to correct a misunderstanding. White gold jewelry doesn't yellow. What you witness is the wearing away of the rhodium plating and you're left looking at the actual white gold.

My engagement ring is yellow gold with a platinum setting, and my wedding band is platinum.  I prefer to wear silver-colored jewelry, so we had my e-ring plated as soon as we got it (it's a vintage ring, so we picked based on the design, not necessarily the metal).  I think it looks fine together.

  • When they're both shiny and new, white gold and platinum look fairly similar.  However, platinum develops a patina over time and gets less shiny.  My e-ring is platinum and we bought it second-hand, so it's already not-so-shiny (which I actually perfer).  When we went wedding band shopping recently, there was a noticeable difference between my e-ring and either a brand new platinum band or white gold band.  I ordered a platinum band -- in time they'll match, but at first my wedding band is going to be shinier.  I was also shocked at how much prices vary from store to store.  The same style ring (platinum band with half carat princess cut, channel set diamonds) ranged from $1700 to $6000 at different stores.
  • Some of that pricing may have to do with the quality of the diamond as well.
