Alteration question

I posted on my local board about finding a seamstress, instead of getting altered through the bridal salon in which I purchased my dress (more so to save money). I got some good recommendations for seamstresses, but I'm unsure of what I should be getting altered aside from:
1. Having cups sewn in
2. Taken in a little at the waist/hips (I measured smaller waist/hips but my ginormous ribcage needed a size bigger). I say ribcage because I am an A cup.
3. A bustle? But what kind of bustle?

Also - what questions should I be asking when finding someone to alter my wedding dress?

I also posted a link to my dress. Thanks in advance everyone :)

Re: Alteration question

  • You should ask the seamstresses what kind of experience they have specifically with wedding gowns.  You can send them a pic of you in the dress and ask what alterations they think are needed, and an estimated price.  They should also be able to recommend a specific type of bustle for you based on the dress and the fabric.
  • As for what all you need to get altered that is a question your seamstress needs to answer.

For the bustle, you could do something different and do a side bustle.  But again the seamstress should be able to give you a good idea and offer some suggestions on what would work with your gown.

  • It's like a mechanic, it hard to know how to find a good one. Trust your intuition.  If you don't trust the feeling you get in your first contact, go to some one else.

I agree...a good seamstress may ask general questions about what needs to be done, but will not give you a final on anything until she sees it on you and answers any of your questions.
She's also your best bet for the bustle advice.  There are so may options!

    Enjoy!
  • Ditto PPs - make sure that they have bridal experience. A good bustle is hard to find sometimes! (I've spent far too much time as a guest at weddings fixing bustles that fell apart)

Also, when you go to your first fitting (and every one thereafter), make sure that you have the undergarments and shoes that you are planning to wear for the wedding. Every time you wear a different bra or no bra, the dress will hang differently.
