Can someone talk to me about photobooks?

Good evening!

I got married a little over a month ago, and I'm considering buying a photobook (like the hardbound shutterfly type ones).  I'd never really seen one before (am I just totally living under a rock?) until a little while ago, so I hadn't given it much thought before.  I have a few questions though if anyone has ever bought/received one.

1.  Was it worth it?  Were you happy with it?
2.  Can you recommend a company that will be cheap?  I don't want to spend much.
3.  Did you buy any for gifts?  I was thinking of buying one for H's parents or my Dad, but not sure if it's lame.  Do you think parents would actually appreciate it, or glance at it once and throw it in the closet?

Thank you for your opinions!  I'm just trying to get a feel for whether they're oh so great/super cool/totally worth it.... or just a waste of money.

My sister had them made for our parents and grandma, and they seemed to appreciate it. I didn't bother, since most of the people I care about are half-way around the world. Facebook was a better photo-sharing option for me, rather than a book on a coffee table. Check for Groupons and coupons for Shutterfly.
  • I've done several through Shutterfly.  Sign up for their e-mails and wait for a 50% off discount to buy.  I've had 1 book come with an ink smear on one page.  I sent a photo in and they sent me a new book immediately free of charge.  I've been very happy with all of the book I've received

  • We did them for my grandmother and each set of parents. We let them pick the photos they wanted and created it for them. They loved them!
  • I have just recently given thoughts to Shutterfly. I definitely want to get a hardcover photobook. I'm also seriously considering a canvas print for our favorite wedding picture.

Glad to see people have been satisfied with the books.

  • My photographer uses them all the time.  Our engagement photos and our wedding photos are in Shutterfly books and they are really nice!  Our wedding photo one has a leather cover with a photo inset.  It looks really nice and the quality is great.
  • I used shutterfly to make a photo guest book and it came out great! As pp's said, look for groupons, sign up for their email list, or even google promo codes and it is definitely worth it!

    Thanks for the input!

  • I ordered one from mypublisher.com, we love it! it was super easy to create (less than 10 mins) and the final product was better than I expected. I wasn't sure what to expect as it was my first time ordering anything like but I've already ordered three since.

  • I LOVE Shutterfly. I've been using them 6 or 7 years now and have ended up with awesome prints, photobooks, and gifts. I agree with PP - if you sign up for an account, you'll probably end up with a lot of good offers. I obviously haven't used them for wedding photos yet, but I did spend a month in Europe two years ago and made a huge photobook when I returned. It turned out gorgeous.

I have used other sites for printing and none of them really compare as far as quality goes.
  • I actually reviewed 4 of our vendors on wedding wire and got a code for a free book.
  • Walmart is probably the cheapest. I also like shutterfly and blurb. Blurb gives you the most layout freedom.
I guess, to tell you the truth, I've never had much of a desire to grow facial hair. I think I've managed to play quarterback just fine without a mustache. - Peyton
  • We used Costco for the ones I made for our parents and grandparents. The only problem I ran into was that there weren't enough pages available in the format I wanted (leatherbound cover) for an album for us to keep. That one I did through mixbook, and I also created a smaller one with pictures from our honeymoon. I think they're a lot more fun than regular photo albums, and they go on sale quite frequently - I created the book and saved it, then just kept checking the site until there was a sale.

  • I just made for our wedding album. I love Shutterfly. I used them once before for a photobook, and also our guestbook. I posted pics on FB and made CDs for parents. But (many many years from now) when my kids get married, I'd be thrilled to get a photobook of their marriages.

  • 1.  Was it worth it? Yes  Were you happy with it? Yes
    2.  Can you recommend a company that will be cheap?  I don't want to spend much.I have one from Wal-Mart, Walgreens and Picaboo. On Walgreens if you watch their website they have sales. Picaboo has great discounts codes available on a regular basis. I recently purchased groupon deals for Picaboo $70 voucher for only $15 (which won't cover S&H)
    3.  Did you buy any for gifts?  I was thinking of buying one for H's parents or my Dad, but not sure if it's lame.  Do you think parents would actually appreciate it, or glance at it once and throw it in the closet? I've done a bunch as gifts. My wedding was the first time my siblings and all their kids were together all at the same time in almost 10 years. I wanted everyone to have something to keep to remember the great time we had together as a family as it is getting harder & harder to do as the kids are getting older & moving away. I made more simple small books for the nieces & nephews, books for my parents & one of my sisters. I'm still working on doing more books. I'm also doing books for everyone in my bridal party. I figured they were important enough to me to be in my bridal party, they should have something to remember the day and all that took place. Facebook is great (I posted everything to facebook too) but I think there is something to be said about being able to pull a book out and look back and remember the day.
  • Mypublisher.com's quality will blow any other company's out of the water. I have quite a few shutterfly books and I used mypublisher for our wedding album and it is SO much nicer. It's leather bound, with lay flat pages, with a leather sleeve, with very high quality paper. It was like $90 after a coupon code. So totally worth it.
  • We are using adoramapix.com at the recommendation of our photog. They're a bit pricier, but we wanted a high quality flush mount album, so it is totally worth it to us!
  • I'm a big fan of Pinhole Press.
  • Thanks, everyone!  For now, I think I'll stick with shutterfly because I can get one for his parents and for my dad for only ~20 dollars each plus tax/shipping.  I really didn't want to spend much more than that, and I think they'll really like them.  Maybe H and I will splurge on a nicer one for ourselves eventually.

Making these is addictive though!  I stayed up way too late last night working on it, haha.

I think I saw a groupon in my email this morning for Picaboo - I've used them before. It's worth at least doing a quick google search for.
