NWR/NER: What would you wear to a special event at a con?

What would you wear to something listed as "VIP/Celebrity Cocktail Party" from 8-10pm at a comic convention? I'm having a hard time gaugeing the formaility, since it is just another event at the convention and not a stand alone party or anything. Do you think people will go back to hotel rooms and change, or just wear what they've been wearing all day?

For what it's worth, I plan on wearing a cotton superhero print dress during the day. Can I just throw some heels on, or do I need to pack an extra true-cocktail-type dress?

  • I wish!

There's a masquerade ball the night before, so my only costume is going towards that. This is our first year attending these things, so I don't have as many well-done costumes to pick from. And I'd rather not wear my cheapo store-bought Halloween costumes (I have Chun-Li and Princess Peach), as much as I love them.

  • ARE YOU GOING TO COMIC CON?!

  • Not the big San Diego Con, nope :(

It's a much smaller one next weekend, but STAN FUCKING LEE will be there, so that's all I need.

  • Stan Lee!
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • HOLY SHIT THAT SOUNDS AWESOME!

I've been begging FI to come to one with me.  There aren't any close . I told him one day we're going to San Diego.  It's my main goal in life right now (sorry, wedding).

My fiance used to go with her brother every year to the San Diego comic con, about 2 years ago it started selling out right when they went on sale. Now, she can't even get tickets because apparently they sell/reserve next years tickets at this years con, and making it very difficult to get anything at all. If you are going to try to go, i hope you guys have a really good connection.

She ended up going to WonderCon this year, its in Anaheim, about an hour and a half north of San Diego. Check it out, not sure if Stan Lee was there, I didn't go, Comics aren't really my cup of tea! haha

Now if it was a country concert, I would be there, front row, with my cowboy boots on and rockin out!
  • Heels should be fine, it's not super super dressy at those kinds of events at cons. Also, whats your cosplay?
  • Oh I don't have a cosplay, the masquerade is an any costume style event. For that, I'm going with my Victorian bustle extravaganza thing I made for The Night Circus Gala we went to back in March.

I think you could wear the outfit from the masquerade again if you wanted to. Then again, when it's really hot, I hate wearing things very long, let alone twice.

You could probably just add heels to your superhero print dress, too. But I haven't attended any fancy events at conventions.

I'm jealous :) I have gone to Dragon*Con twice (the only convention like that which I've gone to), and this year we aren't going. Trying to keep a habit of going every other year. And we're getting married the weekend right after Dragon*Con anyway. But seeing all these convention posts lately, and D*Con updates on Facebook.... it's driving me crazy! :D

  • Cool, I can handle packing both. I'm just working really hard on this print dress, so I want to get as much use out of it as I can. An AW may be in order when it gets finished.

Have you guys gone to things like this? Did you cos play? Who was your favorite person to meet?

Oh, and @StageManager14, you collect toys, right? Have you seen the 20th anniversary Megazord from Power Rangers? H has been drooling over it.

  • My FI helps run the local one so I've seen a lot of this.
Whatever you want. Seriously-people will be in all kinds of things from cosplay to cocktail dresses. I'd just wear a cute maxidress or something. I'm assuming it's in a room at the convention center and not a hotel or restaurant?
