WFL and money talk

What's for lunch?

I have  a "hotdish" I made last night that is a play on Skinnytaste's jalapeno popper stuffed chicken. Yummy and not skinny.

Money q: I always wonder what people splurge on and what they are cheap with. For example, I will easily and HAPPILY drop $100 on dinner with FI, but I would never buy socks that were more than like $5 for a 6 pack. It's weird to me when friends won't go out to eat but they have expensive jeans. I also will spend a lot on makeup, but never ever spend more than $25 on a purse, and that's like once a year.

What do you buy that you don't care about the price? What do you scrimp on?

Re: WFL and money talk

  • I try to buy store brand names of most things but I won't skimp on running shoes- like I won't buy the target or walmart brand of running shoe.

  • I don't mind spending money on good food and wine.  I've started buying nicer clothes, but I still rarely pay full price.  I shop the sale racks.

  • Lunch is still TBD. There's a new food place that is supposed to be opening in the hospital today but I assume it will be packed.

Jenna I'm totally the same! We go out to eat a lot and if I ever kept track of it I'm sure I'd be appalled at how much we spend. Yet I balk at spending more than $25 on an article of clothing or more than $3 per pair of underwear! The only reason the purse I use now is worth over $50 is because it was a gift.

I will "splurge" on shoes that are good quality and comfortable but for me that is spending around $100.

  • I also do try to buy a lot of things on sale, especially clothes. I'll wait until the Loft has a 40% off sale or shop their sale racks. I hardly ever buy things there or other clothing stores for full price.

I agree with Duds though. I'll pay a lot for a bathing suit.

  • I have a lunch meeting, so I 'get' dorm cafeteria food. nom nom (not) I am looking forward to a huge glass of ice cold chocolate milk though ;)

I buy name brand of almost everything. Except peanut butter (Skippy) and ketchup (Heinz).  There are a few things like that too.  I also have no problem splurging on dinner with H once in awhile.  Oh, we buy IKEA for all of our furniture, and our other stuff is Target, etc. But I'll only buy good quality paint and we always buy name brand electronics.
  • I used to only buy really good bras, until mine broke at work one time. I ran to Target and picked up a cheap one... and they're way more comfortable and CHEAP. So now I only buy Target bras. ha
  • I'm bad about going off brand for things.  The whole excedrin recall is absolutely killing me.

I will, however, happily spend $250 on dinner or $4.  I love both kinds of meals for different reasons and am happy to eat whatever you put in front of me!
  • I skimp on almost everything also except "experiences". Like you said Jenna, I'll gladly blow a ton of money on a dinner with FI (whether we are cooking it or going out) or on a vacation, excursion, sporting event, concert, etc.

Really though, I skimp on like EVERYTHING else. FI is the opposite, though he also values experiences more than anything. But he researches all his purchases to the point where it drives me crazy. I mean it's good but sweet lord he takes forever.

I have a lean cuisine, baby carrots, and an apple for lunch.

I am more inclined to splurge on things for our house like appliances, new carpet, pool, etc.

Clothes/make up wise, I don't scrimp on jeans, bras, formal/cocktail dresses or any of my makeup.  I have stupid skin that no one else apparently has (it's a dry skin disorder) so I'm not willing to screw around with facial stuff that will make it worse.

I am cheap as hell when it comes to purses.  I buy something  that I think it cute but cheap because I like to change purses a lot.  And if I bought a $1000 purse H would think that was the purse I'd be using for life.

  • Lunch is a shake, some green pepper slices and kiwi.

I don't skimp on running shoes either.  I made that mistake and had torn muscles.  Never again.

I totally skimp on makeup, clothes (TJ Maxx and Marshall's yo), and just about everything else... mainly because of the wedding.  It will be interesting to see how that changes once THE September 15th is over.

I'm having stone wheat thin crackers, a banana, a nature valley bar and some chicken and rice soup. Exciting! I splurge on alcohol, meat food in general, I'd rather have good quality than stay in my budget. I always save on toiletries though, if I don't have a coupon I watch for it to go on sale and buy a bunch.
  • See, and I try to give myself the argument that $100 on dinner is only going to last me 1.5 hours. If I spent that same $100 on jeans, I would probably have them for 4  years. It doesn't work, I only have old, not cute jeans.

  • I also splurge on produce, meat, anything fresh like that.

As for boxed stuff like cereals, chips, etc. I'm all about the Publix brand which I am a firm believer is the best store brand EVAR.  I hope to never move farther than a 10 mile radius of a Publix.

  • WFL?  No idea.  I saw a commercial for Wendy's last night, they have baked sweet potatoes now, so I might get one of those with a salad.  Nom nom nom.

Like Hike, I spend big $$ on running shoes.  If you scrimp on those you can end up with all sorts of problems like shin splints, cramping, etc.  No thanks.  I also spend big $$ on really good sports bras.  The flimsy ones just don't do it for me any more post 3 babies.  Heh.

Another splurge is my trips to the salon.  I go to an expensive place and use expensive care products because I figure I want my color to last.

I scrimp on things at the grocery store and buy the Store or Generic brands of everything when possible.  I use coupons, too, when I remember, and will build our weekly meals based on what's on sale in the Sunday flyer.  We keep the thermostat low in winter, down near 67.  I'm also a big fan of driving vehicles until they DIE,  my Pathfinder is a 2003 and has 125,000  miles on it.  Car payments piss me off, so when I get a newer car, I try and pay it of as fast as possible. Also NO credit cards as the interest you might pay on somehting like groceries or gasoline pisses me off even more. Wink

I totally scrimp on clothes, I prefer shirts to be under 50 max, though I prefer in the 25 range, pants are 50100 range. I want to get as much as I can cause I don't leave a lot of room in the budget for clothes. I do a huge chunk of my clothes shopping on boxing day, for the sales.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: WFL and money talk : I used to buy Lucky jeans, which are about $100 a pop.  I now have Aeropostale and AE jeans.  $20-30/pair and they fit so much better  too.

<div>See I'm the opposite.  I only buy gap jeans now which are $70-80 and they fit a whoooooole lot better than the Old Navy ones I was buying (which is stupid since they are essentially the same company).  Plus I wear a smaller size in Gap, which that in itself is worth the higher price tag ha ha.  I am vain, yes.</div>

  • I don't scrimp on clothes but I do generally buy most thing on sale. I'll drop $200 on a pair of heels but I won't spend more than $20 on a shirt at target.

When it comes to groceries or household products I'll buy what is on sale and some store brand but there are some products I won't scrimp on.

Most people comment on the amount of money we spend to go to a game based on what they spend when they go.

Uuugh old navy jeans are the worst, they are so shapeless and every pair has made me look like I have a paunch and they stretch out so fast, the fabric is crap!
  • Lunch- I am hoping the wok is open in the cafeteria today. I usually get the beef with a cup of veggies over rice- it is tasty!

I spend more money for hair, makeup and skin-care products. I will spend more on clothes if it is something really unique- I don't want to spend money on clothes when they don't look expensive, if that makes sense.

I spend more for paint- I LOVE Sherwin Williams priciest/best paint- but I do usually wait for a sale before i buy there.

I don't care about: T-shirts, socks, store brands (for things like flour and sugar) My camera is very average, nothing very good.
  • I'm having tuna with crackers, roasted new potatoes, and blueberry yogurt.

FI calls me a money hoarder! I hate to spend money on stuff.  The most we spend money on is his football stuff- cleats, workout clothes, supplements, etc... For myself, I buy almost everything on sale or at TJ Maxx/Ross/Marshalls.

I also need to spend more money and buy quality foundation but I just don't know what I'm doing and I'm afraid to spend a lot on something thats wrong.

  • Oh I should say I never ever buy ketchup that's not Heinz. I think my Pittsburgh upbringing created that. I love target bras too. I'm buying a ton of baby stuff on Craig'slist like toys and entertainment things. I just can't believe how much that stuff costs.

<div>YES!  And what they claim are skinny jeans are absolutely not skinny jeans, they are straight leg jeans.  There is a difference.  The only thing they have close to a skinny jean, has a waist that goes over my belly button.  I may be getting older but I'll be dammned if I'm there yet.</div><div>
</div><div>I also hate that they stretch out. </div>

  • Lunch is a chicken sandwich and bag of chips.

I scrimp on pretty much everything. We don't buy food unless we have nothing left, rarely buy new clothes until our old ones are too torn/holey to fix (with the exception of needed work clothes), and save up for months to buy "fun stuff" (like video games). We're the cheapest people ever.

If I had to splurge, it would be on kitchen appliances. H splurges on lawn equipment since that's his job, gets the best he can, and I tend to spend more on house stuff.

I used to like them when I was in highschool and then recently I tried to get a few pairs and i am in-between sizes. If I go the size down I have they are too tight and give me major muffin top and if I go a size up I have saggy ass jeans. I just donated like 4 pairs of barely used ON jeans.
  • I have yet to find a pair of perfect jeans. I'd pay good money for one.

  • Lunch is a sandwich, fruit and some yogurt. Maybe an iced tea.

I scrimp on a lot of things, especially these days. I have a real issue paying full price for things like clothes when they'll just go on sale at 40% off or better in a few weeks. We buy groceries at the store with the best sale overall and rarely splurge on anything big, except renovation projects.

I don't have an issue buying things at full price if it's stuff I'm using all the time and consider a need - contact solution, vitamins, etc. but I do tend to go to Walmart for things like that since I know their regular price will be cheaper than the drugstore or wherever.
  • We splurge on our cell phone plan and phones as well as our home internet. We don't have a land-line so our cell phones we use for everything.
  • Lunch was a tortilla with turkey and spicy mustard, sweet chili rice cakes, strawberry mint greek yogurt (Dont ever eat that, yuck) and strawberries.

I have an awful time spending money on clothes, but I mostly only buy more expensive brand things.  I feel like it's worth it b/c it lasts longer but I won't buy it unless I get a great deal.  Like buy it from a TJ Maxx or outlet store.

I can't exactly think of anything I don't try to save a dollar on to be honest.  I mean honestly, why pay full price.  Odds are there is an app or coupon for that.

WFL: A sausage dog, chips, and potato salad. I might go eat outside and make a picnic out of it.

I don't buy much name brand. We do splurge on produce & meat, though. We spend a lot on really yummy fish, meat, and cheese. Food is something I don't feel bad about spending the big bucks on.

As far as my clothes go, I just stick with normal gap quality jeans. My work wear is all over the place, but because I live so far from clothing stores I really dont' shop often. I don't wear much makeup and what I do wear is super cheap. I guess I'm just cheap. ;)
