PSA Zilla rocks, long

The idea of eating flowers seems very odd to me.  I mean, I don't go around deep frying roses, or putting daisies in hotdog buns.  Then, one day, WZ puts up a post about eating zucchini flowers. I'm thinking, "if she is still alive with out any GI problems it can't be all bad."   So I put my picky ways aside and decided to give it a try.

I go over to her house, with Tank in tow, to pick up some zucchini flowers.  She shows me how to prepare the flower.  I'm still all wtf inside but I'm going to have a culinary adventure damn it!

Fast forward to yesterday.  I go online and get a batter recipe, add garlic power and pepper to it and proceed to prepare the flowers.  I'm touching the flower and there are prickly things on it.  I'm hoping the frying will get rid of them.  I rinse them off and my mind begins to wonder if Scrappy peed on the flowers.  I figure he probably did and rinse them a little more.  I pat dry and start dipping the flowers into the batter.  I begin the frying.

When the first batch is done I pick up my battered and deep fried flower.  I'm about to take the first bite when I think "I can't believe I'm about to eat a flower" and I make a face of disgust.

I take a bite.  Then another.  Then another.  Then I realize I should save some for the rest of the family.

Hubby comes home and I run to the door with fried flower.  He eats it in one bite.  He loved it, the kids loved it.  I may actually plant zucchinis for next year so I can have my own supply.

I think I'll make a Pernil and have the fried zucchini flowers as a garnish.  She has changed my life.

*takes fist and bumps my chest*   Zilla's my girl!

They sound delicious.  Maybe I should make this more of a short-term project than a "someday" thing.  You make them sound really good.

Do you make boiled lettuce?  Or are you just imagining that is what the texture would be like?

I put lettuce in the bottom of my bowl and pour soup into it.  It's something I learned from hubby.  It's very good.

hmmm...boiled lettuce reminds me of brussel sprouts, which are nasty.  I remain on the fence about fried flowers.

Lettuce at the bottom of a soup bowl absorbs the flavor of the soup but does not become too soggy. It's yum.

    I didn't use water, I used milk.

    1 pint of milk
1/2 cup of flour (i'll increase this next time)
    1 lightly beaten egg
salt, garlic power and pepper to taste

my flowers weren't coated very well but it's a learning process.  I'm sure each time will get better until I'm a pro at it and I'll sell them at street fairs.  ;)
